NCVC Workshop Aims To Enhance Geopark Development In Arab Countries
The National Center for Vegetation Cover Development and Combating Desertification (NCVC) has initiated a workshop titled "Building Regional Capacities to Enhance the Concept of Geoparks in Arab Countries." This four-day event gathers international experts to discuss strategies for promoting geoparks in the region. The opening session coincided with Saudi Geopark Day and featured speeches from key figures, including Deputy Governor of Hail Prince Faisal bin Fahd bin Muqrin bin Abdulaziz.
Over the course of the workshop, participants will explore UNESCO's criteria for global geopark classification. They will also examine how geological heritage can be transformed into sustainable geoparks through education, training, and research. The discussions will highlight the importance of local community involvement and international best practices in supporting these initiatives.

Saudi Arabia is actively working to have 13 sites nominated for UNESCO’s Global Geoparks Network. Among these are Salma Geopark and North Riyadh Geopark, which are currently under consideration. The workshop aims to integrate the management of geological, natural, and cultural heritage within geoparks to boost their development.
The concept of geoparks in Saudi Arabia represents a forward-thinking approach to managing resources sustainably. The Kingdom seeks to demonstrate collaboration among government, private, and non-profit sectors by integrating ecotourism with local development. This initiative aims to create jobs and engage local communities while aligning with both national and international sustainable development goals.
The workshop will conclude with a field visit to North Riyadh Geopark. Attendees will have the opportunity to observe the unique blend of natural landscapes and cultural heritage present there. This visit aims to provide practical insights into how geoparks can balance conservation with growth.
Eng. Hossam Al-Turki, Director of the Saudi Geoparks Initiative and Executive Director of Salma Geopark and North Riyadh Geopark, also addressed attendees during the opening session. His insights emphasized the significance of integrating various sectors for successful geopark development.
Geoparks offer a model for balancing conservation efforts with economic growth by fostering collaboration across different sectors. By engaging local communities and creating job opportunities, Saudi Arabia aims to set an example for sustainable resource management that aligns with broader development goals.
The workshop underscores Saudi Arabia's commitment to advancing its geopolitical landscape while preserving its rich geological heritage. Through strategic planning and community involvement, the Kingdom strives to achieve a harmonious balance between environmental conservation and economic progress.
