Dubai Airport Bridge Expansion Improves Terminal 1 Access And Traffic Flow
Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority has opened an expanded bridge leading to Terminal 1 at Dubai International Airport, adding a fourth traffic lane and lifting capacity from 4,200 to 5,600 vehicles per hour, a 33 percent increase that is intended to ease congestion, shorten travel times for motorists, and improve the overall experience for airport users.
The project is delivered in partnership with Dubai Aviation Engineering Projects, which plans and develops airport infrastructure in the emirate, and is designed to match both current operations and the long-term needs of Dubai International Airport, described as the world’s busiest airport for international passengers.

The increase from three lanes to four is achieved through a newly constructed bridge that uses an innovative structural arrangement based on steel box girders combined with a composite concrete deck, a configuration selected for its strong load-carrying performance and its ability to support faster construction schedules while maintaining strict safety requirements for road users and construction teams.
By adopting this structural system, engineers avoided diverting traffic on Airport Street and did not require temporary support structures under the bridge, allowing vehicles to keep moving throughout the works while the new elements were added alongside and integrated, which reduced disruption for passengers, staff, and logistics operators using the airport corridor.

The bridge expansion is accompanied by wider improvements across the immediate road network, including new pavement layers, upgrades to utilities and supporting service corridors, and landscaping designed to tie the structure into surrounding routes, while modern street lighting systems are installed to enhance night-time visibility and support safer driving conditions around Terminal 1 approaches.
These engineering and urban design measures are part of a broader programme by the Roads and Transport Authority to increase the efficiency of main corridors, improve access to strategic facilities such as airports, and deliver a more integrated road system that can support rising traffic volumes without relying solely on new routes through dense urban areas.
Dubai International Airport bridge expansion and long-term mobility strategy
Coordination between the Roads and Transport Authority and Dubai Aviation Engineering Projects on this bridge is presented as evidence of an ongoing joint commitment to aviation-linked infrastructure, where road schemes are planned alongside airport expansions to keep ground access aligned with flight growth, passenger handling targets, and wider air traffic management objectives.
The two entities state that such projects contribute to quality of life for residents and visitors by making airport journeys more predictable, while supporting Dubai’s competitive position as an international air transport centre, tourism destination, and host location for major global events that depend on reliable connectivity between terminals and the city.
The Roads and Transport Authority also links the Terminal 1 bridge expansion to its wider goals for Dubai’s transport system, which include upgrading key road corridors, increasing the reliability of surface connections to major hubs, and extending sustainable and flexible public transport options that help residents and visitors move efficiently across the emirate.
Through this combination of targeted road expansions, infrastructure coordination with aviation planners, and continued investment in public transport, authorities aim to keep pace with passenger and traffic growth around Dubai International Airport while maintaining safe operations and supporting Dubai’s established role as a major centre for international travel and economic activity.
