Bolivia Utilises Its Largest Lithium Reserves To Attract Foreign Direct Investment In Renewable Energy
Bolivia is actively working on a comprehensive energy transition strategy to boost renewable energy and utilise its natural resources, especially lithium. Alejandro Baldivieso, Bolivia’s Minister of Hydrocarbons and Energy, shared these insights during the World Governments Summit in Dubai. He highlighted the summit's focus on development and technological innovation while prioritising people's well-being.
Currently, Bolivia's energy mix comprises 67% thermal and 33% renewable sources. The country aims to reverse this ratio by 2033, increasing renewable energy to 65%. This plan involves expanding solar, wind, and hydroelectric power capacities. Bolivia's western regions benefit from high solar radiation levels, while the eastern areas have favourable air density for wind power.

Bolivia possesses some of the largest lithium reserves globally, providing a strategic edge in sustainable energy transition. Lithium is crucial for developing storage capacities that ensure renewable energy stability. This resource plays a vital role in supporting Bolivia's ambitious renewable energy goals.
International Cooperation with UAE
Baldivieso confirmed ongoing discussions with Emirati companies interested in investing in Bolivia's renewable sector. He emphasised Bolivia’s central location in Latin America as advantageous for exporting clean energy to neighbouring countries. This geographical position enhances opportunities for international cooperation in the energy sector.
Upcoming Workshop on Energy Collaboration
To strengthen collaboration efforts, a specialised workshop is planned soon. It will focus on three key areas: oil and gas refining and distribution operations; solar, wind, and hydroelectric power; and investment opportunities in the lithium sector. The workshop aims to explore partnerships with global companies and Emirati investment funds.
Bolivia's commitment to enhancing its renewable energy capacity reflects its dedication to sustainable development. By leveraging its natural resources and fostering international cooperation, Bolivia aims to achieve significant progress in its energy transition journey by 2033.
