Sheikha Bodour Al Qasimi Launches AUS Global Day To Celebrate World Cultures
Sheikha Bodour bint Sultan Al Qasimi, President of the American University of Sharjah (AUS), recently inaugurated the AUS Global Day, an event celebrated under the theme "Peace Around the World." The ceremony was graced by the presence of Hussain Muhammad, Consul General of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan in Dubai; Dr. Tod Laursen, Chancellor of AUS, alongside other distinguished university officials. The AUS Main Plaza became a vibrant hub as visitors explored over 29 cultural and student-interest club pavilions, engaging in a variety of activities.
Shaima bn Taliah, Executive Director of Student Experience at AUS, highlighted the importance of such events in enriching student life and promoting understanding among diverse communities. "These extracurricular activities are crucial extensions of education outside the classroom," she stated, emphasizing their role in fostering communication, collaboration, and cultural competence among students.

The Emirati Cultural Club adopted an innovative approach by designing its booth in the form of a book. Yousef Mansour Algargawi, President of the UAE Cultural Club, shared that the display aimed to educate visitors about the historical buildings featured on UAE currency from the 1700s to today. The booth not only showcased these significant structures but also reflected on the UAE's developmental journey.
Among the attractions at the Emirati display were special desserts infused with Emirati flavours by Racks, alongside musical renditions and traditional dance performances. Algargawi noted that Global Day serves as a platform for cultural exchange and a chance for visitors to experience a slice of home.
The Palestinian Cultural Club offered an immersive experience into Palestinian heritage through its art, cuisine, traditional dress, and dance. Abdallah Darwish, President of the Palestinian Cultural Club, expressed his enthusiasm for showcasing Palestinian culture and learning about other cultures through the event.
Similarly, the Indian Cultural Club captivated visitors with its booth inspired by Jaipur's Palace of Mirrors, Sheesh Mahal. Siraj Mecci, President of the Indian Cultural Club, detailed their grand performance that took attendees through various eras of Bollywood cinema. The club's efforts to represent India's rich diversity were evident in their dance performances that combined elements from both North and South India.
The AUS Global Day stands as a testament to the university's commitment to celebrating diversity and fostering global understanding among its students. Through such initiatives, AUS continues to provide a platform for cultural exchange and learning beyond the classroom.
