Biden Administration Erases $7.7 Billion In Student Loans For 160,000

The Biden administration has announced the cancellation of student loans for an additional 160,000 borrowers through existing programmes, according to the Associated Press (AP). The Education Department revealed on Wednesday that this latest round of cancellations will erase US$7.7 billion in federal student loans.

With this action, the administration has now cancelled US$167 billion in student debt for nearly five million Americans through various programmes. President Joe Biden stated, "From day one of my administration, I promised to fight to ensure higher education is a ticket to the middle class, not a barrier to opportunity."

$7.7 Billion Student Loans Cancelled

The latest relief targets borrowers in three specific categories who have reached certain milestones making them eligible for cancellation. This includes 54,000 borrowers enrolled in Biden's new income-driven repayment plan, 39,000 enrolled in earlier income-driven plans, and approximately 67,000 eligible through the Public Service Loan Forgiveness programme.

Biden's new payment plan, known as the SAVE Plan, offers a quicker route to forgiveness compared to earlier versions. More individuals are now becoming eligible for loan cancellation as they reach 10 years of payments—a new milestone that is a decade sooner than what borrowers faced previously.

Future Plans and Proposals

The administration continues to cancel loans through existing avenues while advocating for a new, one-time cancellation that would provide relief to over 30 million borrowers across five categories. The new plan aims to assist those with large sums of unpaid interest, older loans, attendance at low-value college programmes, and other hardships preventing repayment.

This proposal is undergoing a detailed rulemaking process. However, the administration plans to expedite certain provisions, including waiving unpaid interest for millions of borrowers starting this autumn.
