Belgian Cyclist Tim Merlier Triumphs In UAE Tour's Opening Stage

The UAE Tour, a premier event in the global cycling calendar, commenced its sixth edition with an exhilarating start at Al Dhafra Walk, Madinat Zayed, in the Al Dhafra region on Monday, February 19. The race, organized by the Abu Dhabi Sports Council under the auspices of the International Cycling Federation, showcases the participation of the world's top cyclists. This year's tour, spanning until February 25th, covers a total distance of 985 km over seven stages, including four fast stages, two mountain stages, and an individual time trial.

Belgian cyclist Tim Merlier from Soudal Quick-Step emerged victorious in the first stage of the tour, known as the Burjeel Holding Stage. This 141 km race kicked off from Al Dhafra Walk and saw intense competition among participants. The winners were honored by Sheikh Hazza bin Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan and Arif Hamad Al Awani, Secretary General of the Abu Dhabi Sports Council.

Merlier Wins UAE Tour Stage 1

The tour's next challenge is a 12.1 km individual time trial set for Tuesday. This stage is notable for its almost turn-free route, promising a unique test of speed and endurance for the competitors. The time trial will take place on an unconventional course on Al Hudayriat Island.

Global Participation

This year's UAE Cycling Tour has attracted 140 elite cyclists from around the globe, representing 20 teams from various countries including the UAE, France, Kazakhstan, Bahrain, Germany, Belgium, America, the UK, Netherlands, and Spain. Notable teams include Emirates (UAE), Decathlon AG2R La Mondial (France), Astana (Kazakhstan), Bahrain Victorious (Bahrain), and Bora Hansgrohe (Germany), among others.

The UAE Tour continues to be a significant event in the international cycling arena, drawing attention from worldwide cycling enthusiasts and contributing to the sport's growth in the Middle East. With its diverse stages and participation from top global cyclists, the tour is set to offer thrilling competitions across its seven stages.
