Belgian King Philippe Calls Gaza Situation A Disgrace To Humanity And Urges European Leadership
King Philippe of Belgium, in his address on the eve of Belgium’s National Day, called for Europe to exhibit stronger leadership amid growing threats to international law. He described the situation in Gaza as a "disgrace to humanity" and stressed the urgent need for a new regional government in Brussels, according to Belga News Agency.
The King expressed concern over the erosion of international law, which has long been a dependable foundation for states. He warned that when this foundation is undermined, it leads to global unpredictability and violence. "For decades, international law has been the reliable foundation upon which states could rely. Today, however, that foundation is being openly questioned. But when international law is trampled underfoot, the entire world suffers. Unpredictability and violence are then given free rein," he began.

King Philippe highlighted Europe's commitment to cooperation and openness over confrontation. He acknowledged this path requires courage but has brought prosperity and independence to Europe. This approach positions Europe well to tackle digital changes, enhance defence capabilities, and combat climate change.
The King emphasised Europe's need for stronger leadership as a counterbalance to current power struggles. He stated that adhering to democracy, justice, and rule of law can make Europe a credible alternative. "Europe must show stronger leadership. It must become a bulwark against, and a credible alternative to, the brutal power struggles we are witnessing today," he said.
In his speech, King Philippe shared an encounter with two fathers from opposing sides of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict who lost children but chose peace over revenge. Their story deeply moved him and underscored that beyond politics, human dignity remains crucial. "These fathers remind us that, beyond the political dimension, it is always human dignity that is at stake."
The King noted the resurgence of conflicts once thought resolved and praised Europe's choice for cooperation despite challenges. This decision not only fosters trust but also aligns with core values like upholding human rights and international law.
King Philippe's message underscores the importance of maintaining core values amidst global challenges. His call for leadership highlights Europe's potential role in fostering stability through adherence to democratic principles and human rights.
