UN-Habitat And Bahrain Launch Initiative To Revitalize Urban Parks

Bahrain is embarking on a significant initiative to enhance its public parks with the support of UN-Habitat. Collaborating with the Ministry of Municipalities and Agriculture and Budaiya Hub, this project aims to improve park accessibility, comfort, and green cover. This comprehensive effort promises not only a greener future but also valuable data for urban planning.

The current state of Bahrain's parks reveals that less than 15% of households have a park within a 400-meter walking distance. Additionally, many parks have less than 30% green cover, highlighting the need for more vegetation. This initiative seeks to address these gaps in urban green spaces.

Bahrain s Urban Parks Get a Green Makeover

Grassroots Effort with a Vision

A dedicated team of thirty volunteers, including young professionals and students, is driving this transformation. These volunteers are surveying all 154 parks across Bahrain, collecting data on facilities, accessibility, and ecological aspects. Trained in sustainable urban development, they are laying the groundwork for a greener Bahrain.

Dr. Fernanda Lonardoni, Head of UN-Habitat Bahrain, emphasized the benefits of improved park accessibility: "Better park accessibility improves the environment, health, and provides essential recreational and inclusive spaces. The assessment will guide us in enhancing these public areas."

Initial Recommendations and Strategic Goals

The initial recommendations from the assessment include expanding park land to support community well-being and environmental sustainability. Another goal is boosting green cover by planting more vegetation to enhance parks' ecological and aesthetic appeal. Additionally, promoting sustainable practices such as introducing permeable surfaces and eco-friendly landscaping is crucial for increasing urban resilience.

This project also focuses on involving the community in the design process. The final results will incorporate community-driven design suggestions to ensure that parks meet local residents' needs and desires. This inclusive approach guarantees vibrant, welcoming spaces for all.

Imagine strolling through lush parks where children's laughter mingles with rustling leaves, families picnic under shady trees, and individuals find solace in nature's embrace. This vision is set to become a reality as Bahrain enhances its public spaces with UN-Habitat's expertise.

As this ambitious project progresses, Bahrainis can look forward to parks that are not just recreational areas but integral parts of the community fabric. These enhanced parks will contribute to the nation's health, happiness, and sustainability. Prepare for a green transformation as Bahrain's parks blossom into verdant havens of relaxation and recreation.

This initiative promises a brighter future for Bahraini parks by addressing current deficiencies and involving the community in creating better public spaces. With UN-Habitat's support, Bahrain is set to see its parks flourish into essential parts of urban life.
