Bahrain Launches Online Birth Certificate Service For Citizens Abroad

In a world increasingly defined by mobility and technology, Bahrain is setting a new standard for accessible government services. Citizens living abroad can now apply for birth certificates for their newborns entirely online through the National Portal (bahrain.bh). This initiative, launched by the Information & eGovernment Authority (iGA) in partnership with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, eliminates the logistical headaches of traditional procedures, offering a streamlined process no matter where in the world you are.

For Bahrainis welcoming little ones while living abroad, this is not just a service; it's a lifeline.

Bahrain Launches Online Birth Certificates for Citizens

Bahrain's new online birth certificate service is the latest milestone in the country's broader digital transformation strategy, spearheaded by His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Crown Prince and Prime Minister. It reflects a bold vision to make government services more efficient, accessible, and citizen-focused.

Mohammed Ali Al Qaed, CEO of iGA, explained:
"Our goal is to make services more user-friendly, regardless of where citizens are located. This innovation represents a significant leap toward improving the quality of life for Bahrainis everywhere."

Under the guidance of the Ministerial Committee for Information and Communications Technology, chaired by Lieutenant-General Sheikh Rashid bin Abdullah Al Khalifa, Bahrain is redefining how governments can serve their people in an interconnected world.

For Bahrainis living overseas, registering a newborn's birth once required multiple steps, often involving embassies, consulates, and lengthy wait times. With this new service, the process has been condensed into a few clicks.

Here's how it works:

- Notify a Bahraini Embassy or Consulate: Parents must provide the hospital's birth notification and other necessary details.
- Access the National Portal: Using Bahrain's advanced eKey system, parents can log in securely from anywhere.
- Enter the Details: Input the birth notification number, the newborn's personal number, and other required information.
- Submit and Relax: The birth certificate is processed digitally and delivered promptly.
- The service also covers reissuance for lost or damaged certificates, amendments through court orders, and updates for prior applications, ensuring comprehensive support for citizens.

According to Dr. Issa Nasser Al Nuaimi, Undersecretary for Consular and Administrative Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs:
"This initiative helps our citizens complete vital tasks like obtaining a birth certificate from anywhere in the world, ensuring efficiency and convenience. It also reinforces Bahrain's leadership in digital transformation."

This move is part of Bahrain's ambitious plan to set global standards for eGovernment and consular services. By reducing bureaucratic red tape and embracing technology, Bahrain continues to lead in innovation while strengthening the trust and confidence of its global citizenry.

For Bahrainis living abroad, the ability to secure a birth certificate online isn't just a convenience—it's a game changer. Here's why this initiative matters:
- Time-Saving Innovation: Traditional processes often meant long wait times, coordination with embassies, and logistical challenges. Now, it's as easy as logging in.
- Global Accessibility: No matter where a Bahraini citizen is—be it London, Kuala Lumpur, or New York—they have equal access to essential services.
- Reinforced Identity: This system helps preserve and streamline identity documentation for Bahrainis born abroad, ensuring no one is left behind.
