Bahrain To Host ISF-GCC Chapter In 2024 Amid Growing Space Sector Interest

The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Secretary-General Jasem Mohamed Albudaiwi highlighted the significance of Bahrain hosting the International Space Forum-GCC Chapter 2024 (ISF 2024). This event marks a pivotal moment as the space sector in GCC countries is experiencing rapid growth and innovation. His remarks were made during the sixth edition of the ISF, held for the first time in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region at a ministerial level.

Albudaiwi noted that global investments in space exploration have reached approximately USD 272 billion since 2013. He emphasized that GCC countries have been enhancing their capabilities in this field for decades. They have established national space agencies, launched academic and training programs, and encouraged scientific research and innovation. The value of the space economy in GCC countries is estimated to be over USD 10 billion, spanning various sectors.

He also mentioned that GCC countries aim to increase investment in the space sector and attract global expertise to achieve their ambitious national plans. Albudaiwi recalled milestones such as the UAE's launch of the Hope Probe in 2020, Bahrain's project to study carbon emissions with the UK, Saudi Arabia's mission sending two astronauts to the ISS, Oman's scientific launch platform project, Qatar's climate research satellite project with NASA, and Kuwait's participation with NASA's SMAP satellite project team.

During his speech, Albudaiwi expressed pride in the achievements of GCC astronauts. He praised Hazza Al Mansoori and Sultan Al Neyadi from the UAE for their contributions through missions to the ISS. He also commended Rayyanah Barnawi and Ali Al Qarni from Saudi Arabia for their recent mission to the ISS, demonstrating the region’s commitment to space exploration and scientific research.

Albudaiwi recalled the distinguished achievement of His Royal Highness Prince Sultan bin Salman Al Saud, who became the first astronaut from GCC countries with his historic flight in 1985. This achievement continues to inspire current and future generations in the Gulf region.

Future Prospects

The secretary-general concluded by emphasizing the importance of seizing opportunities amid rapid changes in the space sector. He called for exchanging experiences, unifying visions and policies, and overcoming challenges to turn them into opportunities that benefit GCC countries, their peoples, and future generations.

The forum’s theme was "Space as a Game-Changer in Diplomacy and Economic Development in the Region." It underscored how space exploration can drive diplomatic relations and economic growth within MENA. The event showcased how space initiatives are becoming integral to regional development strategies.

Albudaiwi highlighted that space exploration has garnered significant attention from both countries and commercial entities worldwide. The increasing interest reflects a broader trend where nations are investing heavily in developing their space capabilities.

The secretary-general’s participation underscores Bahrain’s role as a key player in advancing regional cooperation in space exploration. Hosting ISF 2024 aligns with Bahrain’s strategic vision to foster innovation and technological advancement within its borders.
