Bab Al-Bunt: A Historic Seaport In Jeddah For Pilgrims And Trade
Bab Al-Bunt Port, located in Historic Jeddah, has a history spanning over 150 years. It once served as the primary entry point for ships carrying goods and pilgrims heading to Makkah for Hajj. Pilgrims from various Islamic nations arrived here before continuing their journey to Makkah. Despite urban development, Bab Al-Bunt remains an emblem of architectural heritage.
The port's structure is notable for its construction using coralline limestone and a reinforced concrete roof. This design sets it apart from modern buildings, showcasing Jeddah's traditional architectural style. Covering around 1,000 square meters, the building includes a ground floor with spacious halls for receiving pilgrims, 12 staff rooms, and an upper floor with more than 16 additional rooms.

Authentic elements are preserved in its design, featuring interior walls adorned with Islamic engravings and Quranic verses, along with arches and columns. These features highlight the cultural significance of the site amidst contemporary urban changes.
Now functioning as a museum, Bab Al-Bunt displays models of traditional marine transportation and documents the history of fishing activities. The museum also showcases crafts related to the sea and Hajj, such as bead-making and carpet-making. Additionally, it features valuable goods historically brought by pilgrims.
Sami Nawar, an expert on Historic Jeddah, highlighted that the Al-Bunt Museum is a significant cultural landmark. "The museum attracts visitors with its rich heritage and marine artistry," he stated. It documents Jeddah's historical role as the gateway to the two holy mosques.
Cultural Heritage and Visitor Experience
The museum offers exhibits on sailing vessels, their manufacturing methods, and sailors' lives. Interactive displays complement these exhibits, providing visitors with an engaging experience. This transformation into a museum ensures that Bab Al-Bunt continues to be a vital part of Jeddah's cultural landscape.
