President of Azerbaijan Breaks Ground On Masdar 1GW Renewable Projects

In a significant move towards bolstering renewable energy capabilities, Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company PJ (Masdar) and the State Oil Company of Azerbaijan (SOCAR) initiated three major solar and wind projects in Azerbaijan, collectively amounting to a capacity of 1 gigawatt (GW). This initiative marks a significant milestone in the renewable energy sector of Azerbaijan, reflecting the growing partnership between the two entities.

The launch of these projects was highlighted at the opening ceremony of Baku Energy Week, attended by notable figures including Ilham Aliyev, President of Azerbaijan, and Dr. Sultan bin Ahmed Al Jaber, UAE Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology, Chairman of Masdar and COP28 President. The presence of key Azerbaijani ministers and Masdar's CEO underscored the importance of this collaboration.

Azerbaijan Masdar Launch 1GW Energy Projects

The projects, including the 445MW Bilasuvar Solar PV Project, 315MW Neftchala Solar PV Project, and the 240MW Absheron-Garadagh Onshore Wind Project, represent a significant leap forward in Azerbaijan's renewable energy journey. The foundation for these initiatives was laid following the completion of investment agreements in October 2023, alongside the signing of Power Purchase Agreements and other crucial contracts.

On this occasion, Dr. Al Jaber emphasized the role of such partnerships in supporting Azerbaijan’s transition to diversified energy sources, aiming for sustainable economic growth. The UAE's vision of tripling renewable energy capacity by 2030 aligns with this initiative, promoting an equitable energy transition.

Azerbaijan’s Minister of Energy, Parviz Shahbazov, referred to the project as a historical success, showcasing the strong bond and strategic partnership between Azerbaijan and the UAE. He highlighted the expected benefits, including substantial electricity generation, significant natural gas savings, and the reduction of carbon emissions.

Mikayil Jabbarov, Azerbaijan’s Minister of Economy and Chairman of the Supervisory Board of SOCAR, and Masdar’s CEO, Mohamed Jameel Al Ramahi, both acknowledged the importance of these projects in advancing sustainable development goals and diversifying energy sources. Jabbarov noted the initiative as a testament to the collaborative spirit driving impactful change in the energy sector.

Al Ramahi pointed out Azerbaijan's strategic importance to Masdar and its ambitious plan to develop up to 10GW of clean energy by 2030 in Azerbaijan. He recalled the inauguration of the 230MW Garadagh solar plant in 2023, the largest operational plant in the region at the time, as a step toward accelerating Azerbaijan's clean energy vision.

The launch of the 1GW wind and solar projects follows the successful completion of the Garadagh solar plant in October 2023, marking a significant achievement in Azerbaijan’s efforts to embrace renewable energy. Established in 2006, Masdar aims to achieve a renewable energy portfolio capacity of 100GW by 2030, aligning with The UAE Consensus to significantly increase global renewables capacity.

This collaboration between Masdar and SOCAR not only strengthens the bond between the UAE and Azerbaijan but also sets a new benchmark for green energy projects worldwide. It signifies a shared commitment to a sustainable future, contributing positively to the economy, the environment, and society at large.
