Dubai Police Issue Guidelines To Avoid Fines When Driving In Rain

In light of the storms predicted to sweep through Dubai this weekend, the UAE government has issued a warning advising residents to remain indoors. Adding to the caution, Dubai Police has disseminated a safety notice through mobile alerts, emphasizing the importance of careful driving during these adverse weather conditions.

For those whose commitments necessitate driving, be it for work or other essential reasons, adherence to specific safety regulations is crucial. Neglecting these rules not only poses a risk to oneself and others but could also result in substantial financial penalties.

Dubai has been no stranger to challenging weather, having faced similar situations in mid-February. During these periods, the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) laid out several guidelines to ensure safe driving in the rain, such as maintaining a safe distance from the vehicle ahead and obeying traffic signals.

It is critical for drivers to be aware of the traffic laws and the potential fines for hazardous driving under rainy conditions. Accumulating 24 black points from traffic violations leads to a six-month confiscation of the driver’s license, demonstrating the severity of such offences.

Among the common mistakes made by drivers during rain is the misuse of hazard lights. Many drivers switch on their hazard lights in an attempt to signal to others about the road conditions ahead. However, this practice only contributes to confusion on the roads, as it disables the use of turn signals. Authorities recommend pulling over and waiting for the storm to pass if one feels unsafe driving.

Using mobile phones while driving, especially to capture the rain's impact, is another violation that can lead to fines and black points. The RTA has highlighted the dangers associated with using phones while driving, noting it significantly increases the risk of accidents and decreases driver reaction time.

Lane discipline is also crucial, with fines imposed for changing lanes without warning. This becomes even more hazardous in wet conditions when visibility and vehicle control are compromised.

Reckless driving, which includes dangerous maneuvers like sudden swerving and running red lights, carries severe penalties. The consequences for such behavior include a Dhs2,000 fine, 23 black points, and a 60-day vehicle impoundment.
