IATA Reports Aviation Sector Contributes 18.2% To UAE's GDP In 2023

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has released a report highlighting the significant economic contributions of aviation and related tourism to the UAE in 2023. The study reveals that aviation activities, including tourism, contributed US$92 billion to the UAE's GDP, accounting for 18.2% of the total. This sector also supported 992,000 jobs, encompassing direct employment by airlines and roles in related industries.

Willie Walsh, IATA’s Director-General, stated, "The UAE is a critical hub for global connectivity. And the benefits of its super connector role brings trade, tourism, investment, and jobs to the UAE. The leadership of the UAE has a strategic vision for aviation, supported by smart regulation and investment in world-class infrastructure. Supporting nearly a million jobs and 18.2% of GDP, aviation makes an enormous contribution to the UAE’s prosperity—both culturally and economically. And we can be confident that this contribution will strengthen as the UAE continues to facilitate opportunities for aviation to thrive."

IATA: Aviation Contributes 18.2% to UAE GDP

The UAE is advancing its sustainability efforts in aviation by focusing on Low Carbon Aviation Fuel (LCAF). By 2030, it aims to produce 700 million litres of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) annually. IATA anticipates further collaboration with the UAE to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2050. The recent launch of the SAF Registry operated by CADO marks a step towards this goal.

To accommodate future demand, the UAE is investing heavily in infrastructure projects like Al Maktoum International Airport (DWC) and Zayed International Airport (AUH). These developments aim to maintain the country's status as a cost-effective hub for airlines and passengers while ensuring world-class facilities.

Workforce Training

The UAE is committed to developing a skilled workforce through substantial investments in aviation training programs. A new IATA training centre has been established in Abu Dhabi as part of this initiative. This focus on education ensures a steady supply of qualified professionals to support the growing aviation sector.

Aviation's role as a global connector significantly benefits trade, tourism, and investment in the UAE. The sector directly employs 74,500 people within airlines and supports an additional 132,300 jobs across various aviation sectors. Furthermore, aviation-related tourism provides employment for around 297,300 individuals.

The UAE handled one million tonnes of air cargo in 2023 alone. This highlights its importance as a logistics hub in global trade networks. As these initiatives progress, they are expected to enhance both cultural and economic prosperity within the region.
