Austria's Defence Industry Achieves EUR 2.9 Billion Production With High Export Rate At IDEX 2025
Reinhard Marak, CEO of the Austrian National Defence Industry Association, highlighted Austria's dedication to enhancing global defense collaborations through its participation in the International Defence Exhibition (IDEX). This year, Austria's pavilion showcases 15 specialised firms, focusing on areas like mobile ground systems, aerial surveillance, personal defense gear, and protection technologies.
Marak noted that Austrian companies are integrating artificial intelligence into traditional defense systems. This advancement is particularly evident in land mobility and unmanned systems. He emphasised Austria’s long-standing presence at IDEX, underscoring its importance as a platform for the country's defense industries.

The Austrian defense sector comprises 120 companies. It excels in ground vehicles, information and communication technologies, cybersecurity, personal defense equipment, and aerial supply and surveillance systems. Marak revealed that Austria's defense industry produces €2.9 billion annually with a 94% export rate, one of the highest globally.
Austria's reliance on foreign markets stems from limited domestic demand for defense systems. Historically, the Austrian government has not heavily invested in this sector until recent years. This has led to a focus on international markets to sustain growth and innovation.
The Middle East is a crucial market for Austria’s defense industry due to its relative stability and demand for high-quality products. Marak stressed that this aligns well with Austrian companies' capabilities. The region offers opportunities for joint manufacturing and technology transfer.
Austrian firms are using IDEX to strengthen ties with regional partners. They aim to explore collaborative opportunities in advanced defense solutions. This strategic participation helps enhance cooperation and expand their reach within the Middle Eastern market.
Marak concluded by stating that Austrian companies are leveraging their participation in IDEX to strengthen relationships with regional partners, explore opportunities for joint manufacturing and technology transfer and enhance cooperation in advanced defense solutions.
