American University Of Sharjah Achieves Top 18% Ranking In QS World University Rankings 2026
The American University of Sharjah (AUS) has made significant strides in the QS World University Rankings for 2026, advancing 60 places to secure the 272nd position globally. This achievement places AUS among the top 18 percent of universities worldwide, showcasing a consistent upward trend since 2018. The university's progress is attributed to improvements in employer reputation, academic reputation, and citations per faculty.
Within the UAE, AUS has excelled by ranking first for employer reputation and international student diversity. It also holds second place for employment outcomes and remains among the top three universities nationally overall. Notably, AUS has advanced in academic reputation, moving from the top five to third place. The institution continues to maintain its strong standing in the top three nationally for international faculty.

Globally, AUS ranks third for international faculty and fourth for international student diversity. These rankings highlight the university's commitment to fostering a diverse and inclusive academic environment. The presence of a vibrant and varied student body contributes significantly to AUS's global appeal and educational excellence.
AUS President Sheikha Bodour Al Qasimi expressed pride in these achievements, stating, "This achievement further validates the shared vision to develop AUS as a world-class center of academic excellence, beneficial research and global engagement. Our steady upward trajectory in recent years is the result of targeted investment in our people, collaborations and common purpose."
The university's recent strategic investments have played a crucial role in its success. These include enhancements in faculty recruitment, facilities, academic programs, and high-impact research initiatives. Last year, AUS launched six new research centres aimed at strengthening its research capabilities with a focus on real-world impact.
Recent advancements at AUS include several patents for targeted breast cancer therapy using immunoliposomes combined with ultrasound. Additionally, compact radars for mini drones have been developed alongside ClymAct—AUS’s first university spin-off—which uses blockchain technology for transparent carbon trading.
Expanding Academic Portfolio
AUS has expanded its degree programs by approximately 33 percent over recent years, particularly at doctoral and master’s levels. The comprehensive academic portfolio now includes 33 undergraduate majors, 48 undergraduate minors, 21 master’s degrees, and eight PhDs. Chancellor Laursen noted that this growth positions AUS well for future expansion.
Chancellor Dr. Tod A. Laursen commented on the university's progress: "We are seeing the impact of a clear institutional direction, strong leadership at all levels and the ongoing dedication of our faculty, students and staff to academic and research excellence."
With 354 world-class faculty members—92 percent holding terminal degrees—and one of the most diverse student bodies globally, AUS is poised for continued growth. The university is ready to advance further into its journey within international higher education.
