AUS And American University Collaborate On New 4+1 Pathway For Environmental Science Students

The American University of Sharjah (AUS) has introduced a new academic pathway in collaboration with American University (AU) in Washington, DC. This initiative allows AUS students majoring in environmental sciences and sustainability to earn a Master of Science in Environmental Science from AU with just one additional year of study after their undergraduate degree.

Dr. Fatin Samara, a professor at AUS, played a key role in establishing this partnership. Her dual affiliation with both institutions facilitated the agreement, supported by several faculty members. "The launch of this new partnership, during the same week as Earth Day, symbolizes our community’s commitment to creating pathways for students to progress toward environmental leadership," said Dr. Samara.

New 4+1 Pathway for Environmental Science Students

Under the 4+1 model, students complete their four-year bachelor's degree at AUS before transferring to AU for an extra year to finish their master's degree. Eligible students can transfer up to nine credits towards their master's program, including two graduate-level courses and their senior research project from AUS. A minimum GPA of 3.0 is required for eligibility.

AUS students admitted to this program will benefit from a 50 percent tuition scholarship, significantly reducing the cost of graduate studies in the US. The program is set to commence in Fall 2025, providing an accelerated route for students aiming for advanced education in environmental science.

This agreement builds on over two decades of collaboration between AUS and AU, which have maintained strong institutional ties since AUS's founding. Dr. Hana Sulieman, Associate Dean of CAS at AUS, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership: "CAS’ leadership is delighted to see this partnership come to life. It reflects our commitment to providing CAS’ students with an enriched academic experience that extends beyond borders."

American University is highly regarded, ranking among the top 100 US universities according to U.S. News Best Colleges rankings and second in The Princeton Review’s Green Colleges ranking. This collaboration offers AUS students an opportunity to study in a global hub for environmental policy and research.

Commitment to Sustainability Education

Dr. Vicky Wilkins, Provost of American University, highlighted the importance of this partnership: "We are excited to expand our partnership with the American University of Sharjah through an accelerated pathway to a master’s degree in environmental science." She emphasized that the program equips students with essential skills and knowledge needed for addressing current and future sustainability challenges.

This initiative not only strengthens academic ties but also underscores both universities' dedication to fostering future leaders capable of driving global environmental progress.
