AUS And Al Akhawayn University Collaborate To Advance Arabic Scholarship And Research Initiatives

The American University of Sharjah (AUS) and Al Akhawayn University in Ifrane (AUI) have formalised a partnership to enhance academic collaboration. This agreement focuses on Arabic and Islamic studies, digital humanities, and emerging technologies. The signing took place at the Central Bank of Morocco, attended by Sheikha Bodour bint Sultan Al Qasimi, President of AUS, and Abdellatif Jouahri, Governor of Bank Al Maghrib.

Sheikha Bodour highlighted that this Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) underscores the robust relationship between the UAE and Morocco. It aligns with a shared vision that values cultural identity alongside innovation. Abdellatif Jouahri remarked that this agreement builds on the historic ties between the two nations, aiming to advance research and academic collaboration in crucial areas.

AUS Partners with Al Akhawayn for Arabic Studies

Dr Amine Bensaid, President of AUI, stressed the significance of merging cultural identity with global cooperation. This approach is essential for preparing graduates for an interconnected world. The MoU supports initiatives in science, engineering, business, architecture, and design. It also includes plans for an open-source Arabic dataset to aid inclusive AI training.

Dr Tod Laursen, Chancellor of AUS, described this partnership as a step towards building cross-border academic bridges. He emphasised its role in contributing to the ethical development of artificial intelligence. The collaboration will include language pedagogy, translation efforts, and liberal arts education initiatives.

AUS and AUI are exploring the creation of a joint centre dedicated to digital humanities and Arabic studies. This initiative aims to foster interdisciplinary innovation through student exchanges, joint research projects, co-developed courses, and academic events. These efforts form part of AUS’s broader strategy to build global partnerships.

The signing ceremony was attended by Dr Ahmed Toufiq, Moroccan Minister of Endowments and Islamic Affairs, Dr Azzedine El Midaoui, Minister of Higher Education, Scientific Research and Innovation, along with officials from both universities. Their presence underscored the importance placed on this collaborative effort by both countries.

This agreement marks a significant step in strengthening academic ties between UAE and Morocco. By focusing on key areas such as digital humanities and emerging technologies, it aims to foster a deeper understanding between cultures while promoting innovative research practices.
