Augmented Humans Conference 2025 At MBZUAI Explores Innovations In Human Augmentation Technologies
The Augmented Humans (AHs) International Conference 2025 is currently underway from 16-20 March, hosted by Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence (MBZUAI). This event provides a platform for participants to explore the latest advancements in human augmentation through digital technologies. The conference is held in collaboration with the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM), bringing together over 100 global researchers and industry leaders.
For the first time, this five-day conference is being held in the Middle East, highlighting MBZUAI's Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) Department's role in attracting top-tier research talent to the UAE. The event features 30 selected papers from a record 77 submissions, along with 20 posters, two workshops, and seven live demonstrations. These presentations showcase innovations in brain-machine interfaces, wearable computing, exoskeletons, and augmented reality.

The conference emphasises technologies that enhance human capabilities beyond individuals, aiming for societal impact across performance, health, and quality of life. Professor Elizabeth Churchill, Chair of Human-Computer Interaction at MBZUAI and keynote speaker at AHs 2025, stated: "The idea of augmenting human intellect and physical abilities has a long tradition. We have long designed tools and technologies that extend our capabilities, expand our capacities, and amplify what we are capable of as humans. Now, augmentation in this new AI era isn't just about simple tools, about computer screens and about things on your body–it's about adaptive things in our bodies and in our physical and digital environments."
Esteemed researchers from institutions like The University of Sydney, MIT Media Lab, The University of Tokyo, and DFKI German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence are participating. They will delve into advancements in bionic systems, brain-machine interfaces, digital health, and tele-manipulation while considering ethical implications.
Sessions will investigate how AI-driven augmentation is transforming fields such as medicine, sports, and rehabilitation. These discussions aim to enhance human capabilities and redefine interactions with digital systems. Dr. Yomna Abdelrahman, General Co-Chair of AHs 2025 and Postdoctoral Researcher at Bundeswehr University Munich highlighted the event's significance: "With the high number of paper submissions in the history of AHs, this edition has set a new benchmark for innovation and research in human augmentation."
The plural term "humans" signifies a shift towards technologies that impact society as a whole rather than just individuals. This approach aims to improve performance metrics across various domains including healthcare and security.
The conference underscores the UAE's commitment to innovation by hosting such a prestigious event. It reflects MBZUAI's ability to draw world-class scholars to advance research efforts within the region.
