Aseer Tops Saudi Regions In Cultural Tourism With Rich Heritage

The Aseer region has become the leading destination for cultural tourism in Saudi Arabia, as highlighted by the 2023 Report on the State of Culture in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The Ministry of Culture's recent publication revealed that Aseer attracted over 541,544 local trips to museums and art galleries last year.

One key factor behind Aseer's popularity is its increasing number of private museums and cultural centres. These venues showcase Al-Qatt Al-Asiri, a traditional interior wall decoration unique to the region, along with traditional crafts and honey production. This rich cultural heritage has made Aseer a top choice for cultural tourists.

Aseer Leads in Cultural Visits

The cultural tourism index evaluates the economic impact of cultural activities on tourism. In this regard, Aseer held a market share of 45% for local and incoming tourist trips involving cultural activities, second only to the Al-Baha region.

In 2023, Saudi Arabia saw a significant rise in both local and visiting tourists engaging in cultural activities, totalling approximately 35.2 million. This marked an increase from 22.9 million in 2022. The report noted that inbound cultural tourism experienced remarkable growth, with 13.77 million visitors in 2023, reflecting a 145% increase from the previous year.

This surge in cultural tourism can be attributed to several factors. Regulatory reforms in the tourism sector, such as new visitor visa regulations and the development and rehabilitation of historical sites, played a crucial role in this growth.

Aseer's unique southern heritage has positioned it as a leading destination for cultural tourism within the Kingdom. The region's distinctive offerings continue to attract significant numbers of visitors each year.

The Ministry of Culture's report underscores the importance of these developments in boosting Saudi Arabia's appeal as a cultural tourism hub.

Overall, Aseer's success story highlights how targeted efforts and investments in preserving and promoting cultural heritage can significantly enhance tourism.
