Art Of The Kingdom Exhibition Highlights New Cultural Narratives Through Contemporary Art In Saudi Arabia
The "Art of the Kingdom: Poetic Illuminations" exhibition, showcasing Saudi contemporary artists, has opened at the Saudi Arabia Museum of Contemporary Art in Jax District. This exhibition, running from February 24 to May 24, features works by 17 notable Saudi artists. The collection includes paintings, installations, and video works that highlight Saudi Arabia's rich history and cultural traditions.
Commissioned by the Museums Commission under the Saudi Ministry of Culture and curated by Diana Wechsler, this exhibition first debuted in Rio de Janeiro at Paço Imperial in November 2024. It attracted 26,000 visitors there. After Riyadh, it will travel to the Shanghai National Museum in China later this year to commemorate 25 years of Saudi-Chinese diplomatic relations.

The exhibition is structured around two main themes: the desert and cultural tradition. The desert serves as a symbol of space and life, providing both a physical and imaginative backdrop for the artworks. Artists explore its materiality and metaphysical aspects to reflect on identity and ecology.
Saudi cultural tradition is another focal point, depicted through diverse histories and influences. This aspect speaks to contemporary views on creative industries' societal impact, especially cinema. Together, these elements offer a multifaceted image of modern Saudi Arabia through contemporary art.
A stellar lineup of prominent artists participates in this exhibition. Notable names include Muhannad Shono, Lina Gazzaz, Manal AlDowayan, Ayman Zedani, Moath Alofi, Ahmed Mater, Ahaad Alamoudi, Shadia Alem, Faisal Samra, Ayman Yossri Daydban, Daniah Al Saleh, Filwa Nazer, Sarah Brahim, Ahmad Angawi, Nasser Al Salem, Basmah Felemban, and Fatma Abdulhadi.
The Riyadh edition will feature newly commissioned site-specific works for SAMoCA@Jax alongside significant pieces from the Ministry of Culture’s contemporary art collection. These additions aim to enrich the exhibition's narrative further.
