The Minarets Of The Prophet's Mosque: A Testament To Islamic Architectural Genius

The Prophet's Mosque in Madinah, a beacon of Islamic architecture, is renowned for its ten minarets that are visible from all directions of the city. The inception of minarets at the Prophet's Mosque dates back to the era of Prophet Mohammed (PBUH), with Bilal ibn Rabah (may Allah bless him) making the call to prayer from the roof of the nearest house. This practice evolved during the Umayyad Caliphate under Al-Walid ibn Abd Al-Malik, who initiated the construction of four minarets at each corner of the mosque. These structures marked the beginning of the mosque's distinctive architectural feature.

Throughout history, the Prophet's Mosque has undergone various expansions to accommodate an increasing number of worshippers. Notably, between 1370-1375 AH, late King Abdulaziz Al Saud undertook significant improvements, including the construction of two new minarets on the northern side, each soaring to a height of seventy meters. These minarets are characterized by their unique four-floor structure, incorporating square and octagonal shapes adorned with arches and balconies.

From 1406 AH to 1414 AH, six additional minarets were added, reaching a height of 104 meters and bringing the total to ten. These new structures harmonized with the architecture initiated during the Saudi expansion. The commitment to enhancing the mosque continued under King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al-Saud, culminating in the largest expansion project in its history by late 1434 AH. This expansion increased the mosque's capacity to accommodate up to two million worshippers, marking a significant milestone in serving Islam and Muslims worldwide.
