Aramco Partners With US Companies To Explore Sustainable Energy Solutions

The Saudi Arabian Oil Company (Aramco) announced on Thursday the signing of three memoranda of understanding (MoUs) with prominent American companies to advance lower-carbon energy solutions. The signing ceremony was attended by Minister of Energy Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman al Saud and US Secretary of Energy Jennifer Granholm.

Following a successful trial of Aeroseal’s technology in Saudi Arabia, Aramco and Aeroseal agreed to accelerate the deployment of this technology across Aramco’s building fleet and other locations. They will also pursue joint testing of building ductwork and envelopes nationwide to identify key opportunities. Additionally, they aim to commercialize the technology in new applications such as gas pipelines and localize Aeroseal’s supply chain within Saudi Arabia.

Aramco's New Sustainable Energy Ventures

Aramco has partnered with Spiritus to explore direct air capture opportunities. Spiritus’ innovative approach aims to address the cost challenges associated with current direct air capture methods. This includes reducing energy needs, passive air collection, and using a proprietary sorbent material that could potentially remove carbon from the atmosphere with up to ten times the adsorption efficiency of existing methods.

Agreement with Rondo

Aramco and Rondo have agreed to explore the deployment of heat batteries in Aramco’s global facilities. These heat batteries are expected to reduce operating costs and support emissions reduction initiatives. The companies have initiated engineering studies for the first industrial-scale deployment of Rondo Heat Batteries, which could significantly reduce emissions from Aramco facilities, with plans for subsequent scaling up to 1GWh.

Aramco’s Commitment to Lower-Carbon Solutions

Ali Al-Meshari, Aramco Senior Vice President of Technology, Oversight and Coordination, stated that Aramco aims to achieve net zero greenhouse gas emissions across its wholly-owned operated assets by 2050. He emphasized that innovative technologies deployed at scale can help lower the cost of reducing carbon emissions. Aramco is investing in these technologies through its research and development, venture capital, and technology deployment programs.

Al-Meshari highlighted the potential for Aeroseal, Spiritus, and Rondo technologies to scale globally, particularly in the Middle East. This collaboration underscores Aramco’s commitment to building a lower-carbon new energy business.

The agreements mark a significant step towards advancing lower-carbon energy solutions and demonstrate Aramco’s dedication to environmental sustainability.
