Aramco Unveils Initiatives For Advanced Digital Solutions In Operations

Aramco, a leading global energy and chemicals company, has introduced new initiatives to advance digital solutions within its operations. These announcements were made during the Global AI Summit (GAIN) at the King Abdulaziz International Conference Center in Riyadh.

Ahmad Al-Khowaiter, Aramco's Executive Vice President of Technology & Innovation, highlighted the transformative potential of new digital technologies. He stated: "New digital technologies such as generative AI and the Industrial Internet of Things are expected to transform not only how we work, but also our commercial environment. Aramco is pioneering the use of these technologies at an industrial scale to add significant value across our operations. Our history of innovation inspires us to continue harnessing emerging technologies and help realize the Kingdom’s ambitions to become a global AI leader."

Aramco's New Digital Drive

During the summit, Aramco signed several memoranda of understanding (MoUs) with key technology partners. These agreements aim to explore collaborations in supercomputing and AI innovations. Notably, MoUs were signed with Cerebras Systems and FuriosaAI for supercomputing advancements.

An additional MoU with Rebellions focuses on deploying Neural Processing Unit chips in Aramco’s data centres. This aims to enhance digital infrastructure and drive advanced AI innovations. Another significant MoU was signed with SambaNova Systems to accelerate AI capabilities and adoption across Saudi Arabia.

Aramco also announced the deployment of an AI supercomputer, one of the first in the region. This system, powered by NVIDIA GPUs, is designed to handle complex computing tasks like analysing drilling plans and geological data for optimal well placement recommendations.

Industrial Generative AI Solutions

The company has partnered with Qualcomm Technologies for initial deployment of industrial generative AI solutions on the edge. These solutions aim to improve facility monitoring, predictive maintenance, and autonomous drone usage.

These initiatives align with Aramco’s broader strategy to integrate advanced digital solutions throughout its business operations. This strategy includes launching the Saudi Accelerated Innovation Lab (SAIL), which transforms innovative ideas into functional products.

AI Cybersecurity Governance

Aramco’s approach has led to creating its first large language model (LLM) for industrial AI applications. Additionally, it launched the Eye on AI Program aimed at establishing robust AI cybersecurity governance and equipping users with essential cybersecurity skills.

The company's efforts reflect its commitment to adopting cutting-edge technologies and supporting Saudi Arabia's ambition to become a global leader in artificial intelligence.
