Aramco Digital And CST Collaborate On AI-Powered Crowd Management Trial For Hajj Pilgrims

Aramco Digital, with backing from the Communications, Space and Technology Commission (CST), recently tested AI-driven crowd management at the Holy Sites. This trial was part of a collaboration with the High Commission for Industrial Security (HCIS), Saudi Water Authority, and Saudi Arabia Railways. The event saw participation from CST acting Governor Eng. Haytham AlOhali and other notable figures.

The AI-powered trial facilitated real-time voice and video communication for operational sectors during Hajj. This ensured uninterrupted, high-quality services for pilgrims. The system provided secure connectivity with immediate responsiveness, unaffected by network congestion. This initiative underscores CST's dedication to leveraging digital infrastructure for advanced technological solutions in crucial sectors.

AI Crowd Management Trial for Hajj Pilgrims

Edge artificial intelligence (Edge AI) played a significant role in this trial by enabling low-latency data processing. It allowed real-time decision-making through analysis of images and video feeds of crowd and vehicle movements. This approach reduced network load while enhancing operational efficiency, showcasing the potential of Edge AI in crowd analytics.

The trial utilised a specialised wireless communication network operating on the 450 MHz frequency band. Aramco Digital received licensing for this network in October 2024. This initiative highlights the strong collaboration between public and private entities to deliver an enhanced and safe experience for pilgrims during Hajj.

Eng. Nabil Al-Nuaim, chief executive of Aramco Digital, along with other key figures such as HCIS Assistant Governor Eng. Ibrahim Al Abu Issa and Aramco Connect president Eng. Eid AlHarbi, attended the event. Additionally, Aramco Digital board chairman Eng. Ahmad Al-Khowaiter participated live from Dhahran.

Commitment to Technological Advancement

This effort reflects CST's commitment to using digital infrastructure to support vital sectors during Hajj with advanced technological solutions. The collaboration between public and private sectors aims to enhance safety and experience for pilgrims through innovative technologies.

The successful trial demonstrates how AI can improve crowd management by providing seamless communication and efficient data processing capabilities. Such advancements are crucial in managing large gatherings like those seen during Hajj, ensuring both safety and efficiency.
