Arabic Language Highlighted As A Pillar Of Civilisation At The Abu Dhabi International Book Fair
The Abu Dhabi International Book Fair (ADIBF) has highlighted the Arabic language's importance in fostering knowledge and cultural exchange. This event showcases initiatives that preserve civilisational memory and celebrate intellectual accomplishments. A key initiative is the "Kalima" project, linked to the Abu Dhabi Arabic Language Centre (ALC), which has significantly advanced translation efforts across the Arab world.
Since its inception in 2007, Kalima has translated over 1,300 titles from 24 languages, covering more than 10 fields. This was achieved through collaboration with 800 translators and major international publishers. The project aims to revitalise the Arab world's translation movement and support Abu Dhabi's cultural growth, reinforcing its status as a hub for intellectual progress.

Saeed Hamdan Al Tunaiji, Executive Director of the ALC and Director of ADIBF, emphasised Kalima's role in promoting cross-cultural dialogue through translation. He stated that the centre is committed to fostering translation, documenting cultural experiences, and promoting authors from both the Arab world and beyond. Al Tunaiji also noted that the fair has established itself as a leading international cultural platform.
Kalima maintains high standards in its selection and translation processes. Expert teams work diligently to provide high-quality Arabic renditions of global literature and thought. This enriches the Arabic language with diverse perspectives and broadens the literary landscape by introducing readers to international creativity.
This year’s fair features a selection of new publications from projects like Kalima, Isdarat, and the Research Grants Programme. Highlighted titles include "A Certain Idea of France: The Life of Charles de Gaulle," "The Boy from Baghdad," and "Journeys of Discovery." These works aim to broaden readers' understanding of global thought and creativity.
The centre also honoured six longstanding Arab publishing houses during the fair. This recognition was part of the first phase of its "Honouring the Creators of Arab Publishing" initiative, acknowledging their collective 520 years of contribution to the industry.
Promoting Sustainable Reading
At this year's 34th edition of ADIBF, over 2,000 cultural events are hosted by the centre. These include 1,700 creative activities under a new community campaign aimed at promoting sustainable reading practices. Such initiatives further cement ADIBF's role as a significant platform for cultural exchange.
The Kalima project has translated various acclaimed literary works, including those on Nobel laureates. This effort introduces readers to international thought while enriching Arabic literature with diverse ideas. By doing so, it supports Abu Dhabi’s growth as a regional hub for intellectual progress.
