Arab Youth Council Explores Youth's Pivotal Role In Climate Action Ahead Of COP29

The Arab Youth Council for Climate Change, in partnership with the Federal Youth Authority, recently hosted a youth circle session titled "Road to COP29: The Importance of Cross-Sectoral Partnerships." This event was part of the second cohort’s training programme and aimed to underscore the importance of partnerships in tackling climate change.

During the session, Khaled Al Nuaimi, Acting Director of the Federal Youth Foundation, and Bérangère Boëll, United Nations Resident Coordinator for the UAE, were featured speakers. Rakan Alonazi from the Arab Youth Council for Climate Change moderated the discussion. The session also saw active participation from youth and council members.

Youth's Role in Climate Action for COP29

Khaled Al Nuaimi highlighted the significant involvement of youth at COP28. He noted, "The participation of youth in COP28 was remarkable, particularly through the Climate Delegates Program, where we witnessed 100 young people participating from various countries around the world, especially from developing that are most affected by climate change." This initiative aimed to enhance youth roles in achieving sustainable development goals and understanding global challenges.

Al Nuaimi further emphasised that youth experiences at COP28 have increased their awareness and effectiveness in addressing climate issues. He mentioned that the Arab Youth Center is organising a training programme for climate change with wide participation from all Arab countries. This programme aims to introduce participants to global challenges and support their role in developing creative solutions during COP29 in Azerbaijan.

Bérangère Boëll stressed the need for unified efforts to achieve the 17 Sustainable Development Goals. She stated, "Achieving the 17 Sustainable Development Goals requires unifying the efforts of different entities in both the public and private sectors, as well as individuals, and activating their role in volunteer work and enhancing youth community contributions in this field."

Boëll added that youth voices become stronger when discussed with all societal parties. She encouraged continuous research, communication with decision-makers, and acquiring leadership skills to ensure successful partnerships involving youth.

Interactive Workshops and Training

The third day of the training forum included brainstorming sessions and interactive workshops led by climate action experts. These sessions aimed to enhance council members' skills as leaders in climate action. The Authority of Social Contributions - Ma’an participated by highlighting its voluntary community initiatives for individuals and institutions in Abu Dhabi.

The current training programme involves 12 young men and women from 10 Arab countries. It provides advanced expertise in environment, sustainability, and climate change through specialised training materials. Participants engage in scientific studies on inspiring youth initiatives globally and field visits to institutions practising sustainability standards.

Al Nuaimi encouraged youth to seize opportunities available both virtually and physically. He advised them to focus on scientific establishment, practical qualification, and building relationships within their local and international communities. This approach aims to help them achieve future ambitions within sustainable development frameworks.

The session underscored how individual and institutional partnerships are crucial for addressing climate challenges. It highlighted how community efforts can enhance sustainability and support environmental policies effectively.

The training programme also includes meetings with leading figures and decision-makers in climate action sectors. These interactions aim to provide participants with practical insights into effective climate strategies.

This comprehensive approach ensures that young leaders are well-equipped to contribute meaningfully to global climate action efforts during COP29 and beyond.
