Arab Poetry Forum Launches In South Sudan To Celebrate Arabic Language And Culture

The fourth Arab Poetry Forum took place in Juba, South Sudan, under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah. The event, themed "Excellence and creativity, leadership and advancement," was organised by the Sharjah Department of Culture's Cultural Affairs Department in collaboration with the Union of Muslim Scholars of South Sudan.

The forum is part of a broader initiative to promote Arabic poetry across Africa. It aims to expand the reach of classical Arabic poetry and enhance its presence among poets and creatives on the continent. Previous forums have been held in Chad, Guinea, Senegal, Nigeria, Niger, Mali, and Côte d’Ivoire.

Arab Poetry Forum Launches in South Sudan

Dr Mohammed Gai Lokwaj welcomed attendees by highlighting Sharjah’s cultural leadership under Sheikh Dr Sultan. He described the forum as a direct result of Sharjah’s vision to use culture as a bridge for communication and social harmony. He also praised the forum's role in offering young poets a platform for self-expression in Arabic.

Mohy El-Din Salem from the Arab League expressed gratitude for Sharjah’s support of Arabic language and culture in Africa. He noted that the forum helps foster cultural ties and reinforces Arab presence on the continent through knowledge and creativity.

The event attracted notable figures such as Mohy El-Din Salem, Representative of the Arab League in South Sudan; Sheikh Dr Abdullah Borg Rual, Secretary-General of the Islamic Council; Sheikh Hamdin Shakirin bin Lawal Al-Owaili, Grand Mufti of South Sudan; Dr Mohammed Gai Lokwaj; and Sheikh Dr Mohammed Kual Kwat. Academic attendees included Professor Paul Deng from Upper Nile University.

Sheikh Dr Abdullah Borg Rual emphasised that Arabic is more than just a language; it carries civilisational and spiritual values. He commended Sharjah’s ongoing support for Arab culture and its positive impact on strengthening these values across Africa's diverse societies.

Celebrating Poetic Expression

The poetry recitals featured themes ranging from personal reflection to social issues. Performances combined classical and contemporary styles, creating a blend of poetic imagery that reflected both tradition and modern experience. Notable works included "I am the South" by Yousef Gai Qoul and "For you, my country" by Martin Wadah Mian.

This initiative is expected to expand further across Africa, reflecting its inclusive vision for cultural exchange. The forum's success highlights its commitment to creative diversity throughout Africa.
