Arab Parliament Urges Global Cooperation To Protect UNRWA From Israeli Dismantling Efforts
Mohammed Ahmed Al-Yamahi, Speaker of the Arab Parliament, has urged parliaments worldwide to act swiftly against Israeli efforts to dismantle the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA). In his communications with global parliamentary leaders, Al-Yamahi stressed the seriousness of these actions, which he believes aim to erase UNRWA's role and undermine Palestinian refugees' rights, especially their internationally recognized right of return.
Al-Yamahi emphasized that UNRWA is crucial to the international community's commitment to Palestinian refugees' rights and heritage. He argued that attempts to eliminate it are part of a broader strategy to nullify refugees' right to return, which violates international law and United Nations resolutions. He called for global cooperation to protect UNRWA's mission and ensure it continues providing essential services as mandated under UN Resolution 194 of 1948.

The Arab Parliament speaker highlighted that safeguarding UNRWA is vital for regional stability and achieving a just, comprehensive peace. He reiterated that there is no viable alternative to UNRWA in fulfilling its humanitarian and stabilizing roles. Al-Yamahi also appealed to international and regional parliaments to adopt a unified stance in defense of UNRWA, urging their governments to apply diplomatic pressure on Israeli authorities.
Al-Yamahi called for a strong commitment to uphold international legitimacy and adhere to international law. He stressed the need for an end to prolonged violence and human rights violations against unarmed civilians, which have persisted for over a year. His appeal underscores the importance of maintaining international norms and protecting vulnerable populations from ongoing conflicts.
In his messages, Al-Yamahi underscored the necessity for urgent diplomatic action. He urged parliaments worldwide to work together in countering Israeli attempts that threaten UNRWA's existence. By doing so, he believes they can help preserve the rights of Palestinian refugees and contribute to regional peace efforts.
The call from Al-Yamahi reflects a broader concern about maintaining stability in the region through adherence to established international agreements. His emphasis on cooperation highlights the need for collective action in addressing challenges faced by Palestinian refugees and ensuring their rights are protected under international law.
This appeal from the Arab Parliament speaker serves as a reminder of the ongoing challenges faced by Palestinian refugees. It calls on global leaders to take decisive steps in defending their rights and supporting institutions like UNRWA that play a critical role in providing essential services and upholding international commitments.
