Arab Ministerial Contact Committee Issues Final Statement Supporting Syria's Unity And Stability

The Arab Ministerial Contact Committee on Syria has expressed its unwavering support for the Syrian people, pledging to provide essential assistance during this challenging period. Following a recent meeting in Aqaba, the Committee underscored the importance of backing the UN envoy to Syria. It highlighted the necessity of a comprehensive national dialogue, urging all Syrians to unite in creating a free, secure, and unified nation that aligns with their aspirations.

The Committee emphasised the need for an inclusive political transition in Syria. This process should involve all political and social groups, including women and youth. The transition must be peaceful and just, overseen by both the United Nations and the Arab League. It should adhere to Security Council Resolution No. 2254, which calls for forming a transitional governing body through consensus among Syrians.

Support for Syria from Arab Ministers

The Committee called upon the UN Secretary-General to equip the UN envoy with necessary resources. Establishing a UN mission to aid Syria's transitional process is crucial. This mission would support a Syrian-led political process as outlined in Resolution 2254. The aim is to assist Syrians in achieving a new political system through fair elections under a new constitution.

Humanitarian Support and Refugee Return

Providing humanitarian aid remains vital for Syrians, with cooperation from relevant UN organisations being essential. The Committee stressed preparing conditions for refugees' voluntary return home, ensuring they receive needed assistance. National reconciliation and transitional justice must be pursued without retaliation, aiming to end bloodshed and suffering.

Security and Stability Concerns

Immediate cessation of military operations is necessary to respect Syrians' rights without discrimination based on race or religion. Preserving state institutions is crucial to prevent chaos and empower police forces for citizen protection. Combating terrorism remains a priority due to its threat to regional and global security.

Condemnation of External Aggression

The Committee condemned Zionist incursions into buffer zones near Syria as violations of international law. It demanded withdrawal of Zionist forces from occupied territories like the Golan Heights. The Security Council was urged to address these violations, reinforcing that Syria's security is integral to regional stability.

The Committee reaffirmed its solidarity with Syria in maintaining its unity, sovereignty, and stability. Efforts will continue towards rebuilding Syria as an independent state free from terrorism or extremism. Coordination with other Arab nations will ensure consistent support for Syria's future aligned with agreed principles and Security Council resolutions.

The meeting concluded with plans to coordinate with other Arab countries for a League Council meeting where this report will be presented. Communication with international partners will also be pursued to develop a comprehensive stance supporting Syria's rebuilding efforts according to shared principles and relevant resolutions.
