Arab League Condemns Israeli Actions Against UNRWA, Urges Protection Of Palestinian Refugees
The Arab League Council has criticised Israel for ignoring global calls to stop enforcing laws that limit the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) in Palestinian territories. This statement followed a special meeting requested by Jordan, with Egypt and Palestine's coordination, highlighting the negative impact on UNRWA's essential work in the West Bank and Gaza.
Israel's actions against UNRWA properties are seen as a breach of international law. The council stressed that Israel, as an occupying power, lacks sovereignty over East Jerusalem or territories occupied since 1967. It cannot legally alter these areas' status or take measures against UNRWA.

UNRWA, created by a UN resolution in 1949, is crucial for millions of Palestinian refugees. The council warned that undermining its operations could destabilise the region and threaten the two-state solution. Israeli legislation targeting UNRWA is considered a clear violation of international law and the Geneva Conventions.
The council highlighted that banning UNRWA would worsen humanitarian conditions in Gaza. Over 60 percent of Gaza's population relies on the agency for food and healthcare. Such restrictions could lead to severe consequences for these communities.
The Arab League Council urged donor countries to honour their commitments to UNRWA. It emphasised the importance of the Joint Commitments Initiative launched by Kuwait, Jordan, and Slovenia in May 2024. This initiative aims to support UNRWA's continued operations amid increasing challenges.
The council reiterated its full support for Palestinian rights, rejecting any attempts to change the demographic or geographic reality of Palestinian territories. It called on the General Secretariat of the Arab League to distribute their statement to diplomatic missions and international bodies to protect UNRWA’s operations urgently.
The council's statement underscores the critical role of international cooperation in maintaining stability in the region. Ensuring support for UNRWA is vital not only for humanitarian reasons but also for preserving peace prospects between Israel and Palestine.
