Arab League Warns Of Resource Depletion Impact On Food Security During Arab Environment Day

The Arab League has raised concerns about the ongoing depletion of natural resources and land degradation, which threaten food security and stability in the region. They report that 90% of land in Arab countries is classified as dry or extremely dry, making it vulnerable to desertification.

Ambassador Dr. Ali bin Ibrahim Al Maliki, Assistant Secretary-General and Head of the Economic Affairs Sector at the Arab League, emphasised the need for regional cooperation to tackle these challenges. He highlighted the importance of adhering to environmental treaties and sustainable development goals.

During the Arab Environment Day event at the Arab League’s headquarters in Cairo, Dr. Al Maliki stressed regional collaboration. This year's theme was "Land Restoration for Enhanced Resilience." The gathering included experts from Arab nations, international organisations, and civil society to discuss efforts against desertification and drought resilience.

The Arab Council of Ministers Responsible for Environmental Affairs has launched several programmes aligned with the Arab Declaration on Environment and Development. These initiatives focus on combating desertification, reducing industrial pollution, and promoting a green economy across the region.

The Arab League has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with China to create the China-Arab International Research Centre for Drought, Desertification, and Land Degradation. This partnership aims to utilise China's expertise in controlling desertification to improve sustainable land management in the region.

The upcoming 35th meeting of the Council of Arab Ministers Responsible for the Environment will take place on 14th October in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. This meeting will address further strategies to combat environmental challenges throughout the Arab region.
