Arab League Urges Collective Action To Safeguard Radio's Cultural Role On World Radio Day

The Arab League has urged for unified efforts to maintain radio's significance in sharing information, promoting culture, and encouraging peace. The League highlighted radio's vital role in connecting generations and cultures, emphasising its importance within the social and cultural framework of societies.

Ambassador Ahmed Rashid Khattabi, Assistant Secretary-General of the Arab League and Head of the Media and Communication Sector, stated that celebrating World Radio Day acknowledges radio as a key media platform. He stressed the need for collaboration between major networks and local stations to ensure diverse information access.

Arab League Calls for Radio Preservation Efforts

This statement was made on World Radio Day, celebrated annually on 13th February. UNESCO declared this day in 2011, marking the first United Nations radio broadcast in 1946. The United Nations General Assembly officially adopted it in 2012.

Khattabi noted that despite challenges from digital media and social platforms, radio remains adaptable and relevant. Its ability to evolve with the changing media landscape ensures its continued influence.

The Arab League actively supports radio as a powerful community media tool. In 2017, during the second edition of the Arab Media Excellence Award, they dedicated the award to radio under the theme "The Role of Radio in Serving Society." This highlights their commitment to recognising radio's societal impact.

Khattabi also mentioned that World Radio Day offers a chance to enhance international cooperation among broadcasting organisations. This collaboration is crucial for strengthening radio's role globally.

The Arab League remains committed to celebrating this occasion, recognising radio's enduring influence despite modern media challenges. Their dedication underscores the importance of preserving this medium for future generations.
