45 Arab Authors To Shape Future Of Children's Literature At SCRF 2024
The 15th edition of the Sharjah Children's Reading Festival (SCRF), a beacon of literary talent and creativity, is poised to bring together 45 esteemed authors and experts from 14 Arab countries. These contributors have made significant strides in the domain of children’s literature. Scheduled to run from 1st to 12th May at Expo Centre Sharjah, this 12-day cultural event, organized under the theme ‘Once Upon a Hero’ by the Sharjah Book Authority (SBA), promises an enriching experience for attendees.
The festival will highlight an extensive mix of genres within children's and young adult literature, including science fiction, history, mysteries, adventures, and educational books. It aims to spotlight the creative prowess in this vital sector, offering unique opportunities to meet distinguished Emirati and Arab guests. These guests will lead discussions on the challenges within children's literature and offer insights to shape its future.
Among the prominent Emirati writers participating is Nadia Al Najjar, a key figure in children's literature and recipient of the Sharjah Book Fair Award for Best Emirati Book. Al Najjar, who also serves as an advisory member of the UAE Board on Books for Young People, will delve into the cultural impact of stories on youth. Aisha Bati Al Shamsi, specializing in child care and education and director of the Fann Training and Consulting Centre, will share her expertise in developing early childhood curricula and national standards. Noura Khouri will contribute her insights on integrating writing with volunteer work in motherhood, early childhood, and emphasizing the UAE’s natural environment and cultural heritage.
From Syria, Dr. Taleb Omran will provide insights into the role of science fiction in cultivating awareness and culture among children. His work spans a wide array of genres including books, studies, children's literature, short stories, and novels. Dr. Al-Eid Jalouli from Algeria, a professor of Arabic and children’s literature with a vast library of works in literature, criticism, language, culture, and children's literature, will also join the festival. His exceptional research papers presented at the International Conference on the Arabic Language in Dubai earned him a prestigious accolade.
Dr. Wafa Al Shamsi from Oman, an academic at the United Arab Emirates University specializing in children’s and young adult literature, will share her extensive experience in printed and broadcast media. With over 50 printed stories and 60 contributions to various radio and television programmes to her name, Dr. Al Shamsi’s participation underscores the festival's commitment to fostering a love for reading among young audiences.
The SCRF stands as a testament to the Sharjah Book Authority's dedication to nurturing literary talent and creativity within children's literature. By bringing together authors, experts, and enthusiasts from across the Arab world, it not only celebrates but also significantly contributes to the growth of this essential literary sector.
