UAE Team Emirates' Morgado Clinches Victory In Rainy Vuelta Asturias Stage
In a thrilling display of skill and teamwork, Antonio Morgado of UAE Team Emirates clinched his second professional victory amidst challenging weather conditions during stage 2 of the Vuelta Asturias. This win follows closely on the heels of his recent triumph at the Giro di Romagna, marking a significant moment in his burgeoning career. The Portuguese cyclist outpaced competitors Albert Torres of Movistar and his own teammate Isaac Del Toro, who admirably holds onto the general classification lead.
The 200 km race journey from Ribeira de Arriba to Ribadesella was marked by a mix of challenging climbs, including one 2nd category ascent and five 3rd category hills, with the final climb occurring 40 km before the finish. UAE Team Emirates showcased their strategic prowess by allowing a breakaway of five riders before reeling them in with 20 km remaining. The team's efforts culminated in a perfectly executed setup for Morgado, who seized the opportunity with a strong final sprint.

This victory represents UAE Team Emirates' 28th win of the season, underscoring their dominance and strategic excellence in professional cycling. The team is now poised to defend Isaac Del Toro's leader’s jersey in the upcoming final stage from Benia de Onis to Oviedo, spanning 140 km. Their main challenge is expected to come from Josè Manuel Diaz of Burgos-BH, currently third in the general classification, trailing by 1’09", with Del Toro’s teammate Rafal Majka holding second place.
Morgado reflected on his victory with gratitude towards his team, highlighting the challenging weather conditions and the collective effort that paved the way for his win. "The race was long and the day cold and with a lot of rain. The team trusted me, and all my mates did a great performance in trying to give me the opportunity to win, so I tried to sprint exploiting a super good lead-out," he commented.
As UAE Team Emirates looks forward to the final stage, their strategy and teamwork will once again be crucial in their quest to secure overall victory in this prestigious event. Morgado's recent wins not only elevate his status within the professional cycling community but also reinforce UAE Team Emirates' position as a formidable force in the sport.
