Annual Harid Fish Migration At Farasan Islands Highlights Marine Life And Cultural Heritage

The Farasan Islands are experiencing the annual arrival of harid fish, also known as parrotfish. These fish travel from the Indian Ocean through the Arabian Sea to reach the Red Sea's shores. Known for their vibrant colours and unique beak-like mouths, harid fish play a vital role in coral reef ecosystems. Over 90 species of this fish exist, each with distinct shapes and colours.

Residents of Farasan have a special way to predict the arrival of these fish. They notice a unique scent from the sea after sunset on the 15th day of the lunar month. This natural event is celebrated with joy as it marks an important cultural tradition for the islanders.

The annual harid catch is celebrated at the end of April, reflecting Farasan's rich cultural heritage. This tradition has been a source of happiness for generations. Recognising its significance, Prince Mohammed bin Nasser bin Abdulaziz initiated the first Harid Festival in 1426 AH.

The festival highlights Farasan as a promising tourist destination with potential for tourism and investment. The Governorate has completed preparations for the 21st edition of this vibrant event, set to begin tomorrow.
