Andalusian Cultural Landscapes Exhibition Officially Opens In Sharjah With Rich Heritage Display
Sheikh Dr Salem bin Abdulrahman Al Qasimi, Chairman of the Ruler's Office, inaugurated the "Andalusian Cultural Landscapes" exhibition. This event is a collaboration between the Sharjah Museums Authority and Spain's Islamic Culture Foundation (FUNCI). It will be held at the Sharjah Museum of Islamic Civilisation from October 15, 2025, to April 12, 2026.
The exhibition is divided into two main themes. The first theme, "Gardens of Bliss," explores the role of gardens in Andalusia as spaces for creativity and harmony. It delves into four key concepts: productive gardens for growing food; scientific gardens for learning about plants; spiritual gardens for reflection; and poetic gardens that inspire creativity.
The second theme, "The Good Country," focuses on how Andalusians have interacted with their land over time. It covers topics like irrigation techniques, rain-dependent farming, traditional crafts, and local markets. This section highlights the deep connection between people and their environment and how various industries evolved from this relationship.
More than 60 artistic and historical pieces are featured in the exhibition. Among them are artifacts being displayed for the first time in Sharjah. These items highlight Andalusia's agricultural and cultural heritage, blending nature's beauty with human experience.
The exhibition offers a journey through Andalusia's rich history dating back to the eighth century AD. During this period, Islamic civilisation left a lasting impact on the Iberian Peninsula by merging Eastern ideas with local traditions. This environment fostered scientific innovation in farming, irrigation, crafts, and architecture.
Emilio Pin Godos, Spain's Ambassador to the UAE, expressed gratitude to Sharjah for its support of culture and heritage preservation. He praised the partnership between Sharjah and Spain across various fields and celebrated the opening of this unique exhibition.
Cultural Exchange
A special discussion session titled "A Journey Through the Heritage of Andalusia: Knowledge and Cultural Exchange" will be part of the exhibition's activities. Experts from Spain and the UAE will discuss Andalusia's rich history and how Islamic culture shaped the Iberian Peninsula's unique characteristics.
Sheikh Dr Salem bin Abdulrahman received publications from FUNCI as appreciation for his presence at this inaugural event in Sharjah. This marks the first collaboration between Sharjah Museums Authority and FUNCI.
Lessons from History
The exhibition presents a model highlighting a balanced relationship between culture and nature. It offers lessons to address today's environmental challenges by revisiting historical knowledge. Additionally, it emphasises Andalusian heritage as a cultural link connecting Islamic East with Mediterranean and European cultures.
The event was attended by notable figures including Emilio Ben Godos, Asma Rashid Bin Taliah, Secretary-General of the Sharjah Executive Council; Aisha Rashid Deemas, Director-General of Sharjah Museums Authority; along with other officials and diplomats.
This exhibition provides an insightful look into Andalusia's rich culture by combining historical narratives with new research. It helps us understand city and countryside life back then while offering valuable lessons that continue to inspire us today.
