Sabya Governorate's Ancient Castles: A Testament To Architectural Art

The Sabya Governorate in the Jazan region is home to numerous archaeological buildings and castles, each with its own unique story. Among these, the Sabya Archaeological Castle stands as a testament to ancient history, with origins dating back to the early 20th century. This castle, rich in historical significance, is a must-visit for history enthusiasts and archaeology researchers.

Located near Sabya Avenue within King Fahd Park, the castle is part of the present city of Sabya and offers a view of Wadi Sabya, similar to what visitors saw hundreds of years ago. Evidence suggests that these structures date back to the early 14th century. The Sabya Archaeological Castle showcases spacious rooms with high ceilings and thick walls adorned with geometric and floral patterns, reflecting the craftsmanship of its builders.

The castle's construction utilises volcanic stone of various sizes and shapes, giving it a distinctive beauty. Local materials such as volcanic stone, bricks, wood, and limestone were used in its construction. Some accounts indicate that the clay for bricks was sourced from the banks of Wadi Sabya, while volcanic stone came from nearby volcanoes, including Jabal Akwa, located northeast of Sabya.

North of the ancient castle lies a mosque constructed using the same materials as the castles and other structures. This mosque was intended for prayer and gatherings of religious leaders, dignitaries, and local residents. Despite some damage, its mihrab (prayer niche) still stands as a testament to the area's rich history.

Preservation Efforts

The Kingdom's Heritage Commission is actively working to preserve the Sabya Archaeological Castle. Recognising its importance as one of the most significant archaeological sites in the Jazan region, the commission is taking measures to protect these buildings from potential risks. Their commitment ensures that visitors can continue to explore this rich archaeological site.

The ancient castle intrigues historians by offering insights into the architecture and civilisation of that era. Some accounts suggest that remains of other buildings exist near the ancient castle, presenting opportunities for further archaeological excavations to uncover more secrets about this site.
