AlUla Celebrates Intangible Heritage Day, Highlighting Cultural Authenticity And Traditions
The Governorate of AlUla marks the International Day of the Intangible Cultural Heritage on October 17 each year. This day, recognised by UNESCO, celebrates living heritage that defines cultural identities and authenticity. AlUla's observance highlights its dedication to preserving ancient traditions and empowering locals to pass down knowledge, aligning with Saudi Vision 2030's cultural sustainability goals.
AlUla is renowned for its rich cultural tapestry, especially in performing arts like Al-Ardah, Al-Zir, and Al-Dahha. These traditional folk expressions include poetry and storytelling. Social customs related to marriage ceremonies are also significant, showcasing traditions passed through generations.

Generosity and hospitality in AlUla are symbolised by coffee, traditional gathering spaces, and mud houses. The art of mud construction alongside pottery, engraving, and carving reflects the region's authentic creativity over centuries. Al-Sadu weaving stands out as a traditional craft that creates intricate geometric patterns representing desert life aesthetics.
Traditional foods form a core part of AlUla's identity, along with ancient irrigation techniques linked to agriculture and oases. Palm trees are vital in local life, with activities like date harvesting and product manufacturing deeply embedded in history. Palms connect Saudi people's history and livelihood by providing food and professions.
Camel chanting is an integral part of AlUla’s culture due to its prominence in camel breeding and care. Arabic calligraphy also features prominently with diverse forms and embellishments that reflect deep-rooted cultural identity through aesthetic expression.
Looking ahead, AlUla plans to host the Ancient Kingdoms Festival from November 20 to December 6. This event will be followed by the Winter at Tantora Festival starting December 18. These festivals aim to bolster AlUla's cultural and tourism profile both locally and globally.
