AlUla Manara Observatory And SETI Institute Join Forces For Astronomy Excellence
The Royal Commission for AlUla has entered into a cooperation agreement with the SETI Institute to advance the AlUla Manara Observatory. This observatory aims to become a global leader in space and astronomy sciences, enhancing AlUla's reputation as a prime destination for star and astronomy exploration tourism.
This collaboration will transform AlUla Manara into a hub for scientific progress through joint research projects and initiatives. These efforts will cater to the growing astro-tourism sector in AlUla and provide educational opportunities to develop necessary skills for working at the observatory. The advancements will enable scientists to conduct comprehensive space surveys, identifying new stars, planets, and comets.

Eng. Nayef Al-Malik, Supervisor of the AlUla Manara program, emphasized that this partnership strengthens AlUla’s role as an essential center for science and knowledge exchange. He highlighted that the SETI Institute is renowned globally for its expertise in research and scientific exploration, bringing decades of technical knowledge in space and astronomy.
The observatory's educational centers will enhance local capabilities in space sciences using virtual reality. Additionally, an awareness center will allow visitors to familiarize themselves with astronomy, aligning with the commission’s vision of establishing AlUla as a global knowledge-sharing center for research and innovation.
SETI Institute CEO Bill Diamond stated that their mission is to share research findings with the world. He noted that collaborating with the Royal Commission for AlUla opens new avenues for advancing space sciences, education, and technology development.
Community Engagement
Frank Marchis, Senior Planetary Astronomer and Director of Citizen Science at SETI Institute, said: "We envision the AlUla Manara Observatory as a beacon of discovery, equipped with advanced and modern telescopes to detect new planets and stars, pushing astronomical research to further frontiers." He added that their initiative would invite the community and tourists to "stargaze, explore AlUla’s rich scientific heritage, foster international collaboration, and revive humanity's deep connection with the universe."
SETI Institute's Role
The SETI Institute focuses on exploring life origins and intelligence in planets and stars while sharing this knowledge globally. Scientists at the institute use their own Allen Telescope Array alongside advanced observational tools from ground-based and space-based sources. They also analyze data from leading space observatories like the James Webb Telescope and devices on Mars such as Perseverance and Curiosity rovers.
The development of the AlUla Manara Observatory is set near Gharameel in AlUla. This location is among the top 10% globally for clear, dark skies. The observatory aims to inspire local citizens towards careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM), supporting economic growth aligned with Saudi Vision 2030 goals.
The observatory will open in phases over several years, continuing its research collaborations and educational initiatives throughout its development.
