AlUla Royal Commission And Henan Province Ink Deal To Preserve Cultural Heritage
In a significant move towards cultural preservation and international cooperation, the Royal Commission for AlUla (RCU) has entered into a strategic partnership with the Cultural Heritage Administration of Henan Province, China. This collaboration is set to bolster the Saudi-Chinese partnership, focusing on a wide array of cultural exchanges including archaeology, heritage preservation, museum collaborations, research, talent development, and tourism.
The agreement aims to leverage technology in archaeology through the establishment of an advanced archaeological laboratory and will see both regions engaging in excavation activities and research. A key aspect of this partnership is the emphasis on connecting heritage sites in AlUla with those in Henan, fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation of their historical significance. Moreover, the initiative will facilitate exchange programs, participation in exhibitions and events, and the adoption of innovative museum technologies such as virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR).

AlUla's inclusion as a founding member of the International Tourism Alliance of Silk Road Cities marks a pivotal step towards enhancing cultural cooperation and connectivity between Saudi Arabia and China. This alliance is dedicated to establishing a foundation for long-term cooperation and knowledge exchange among cities that hold significant tourism, historical, and cultural value. With 58 founding cities from 26 countries across various continents, AlUla is set to play an active role in international forums, delegations, and events aimed at promoting tourism and sustainable development.
Both AlUla Governorate and Henan Province are recognized for their rich historical backgrounds as crossroads of ancient civilizations. AlUla has been a cradle of human settlement for over 200,000 years, while Henan stands as China's third-largest province with a population of 100 million. It is notable for housing five out of six key archaeological projects that trace the origins of Chinese civilization. The shared heritage of these regions extends over 1,400 years along the ancient incense and Silk Roads.
The partnership also coincides with the "AlUla, Wonder of Arabia" exhibition at the Palace Museum in Beijing, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Running until April 11, this exhibition has already attracted over 250,000 visitors. It showcases various sections, exhibits, archaeological pieces, and heritage items from historical sites in AlUla.
This collaboration aligns with the objectives set forth by AlUla Vision and Saudi Vision 2030, aiming to preserve cultural heritage while fostering international partnerships. Through these efforts, AlUla and Henan Province are not only protecting their rich histories but also paving the way for future generations to explore and appreciate the legacy of ancient civilizations.
