AlUla Shines As A Global Tourist Destination With Its Vast Cultural Heritage
AlUla Governorate, situated in northwest Saudi Arabia, is a cultural hub attracting tourists keen to explore its rich heritage. The ancient town of AlUla, dating back to the 12th century, features approximately 900 mud-brick houses. Historically, trade caravans carrying incense passed nearby, overlooking palm oases with around three million palm trees. A 45-meter-tall fortress was built within the town, serving as both a watchtower and a defensive structure for the town's wall, which had 14 gates.

Jabal Ikmah stands out as one of AlUla's most significant historical sites. Known as the largest open-air library in the Arabian Peninsula, it boasts hundreds of ancient inscriptions and rock carvings. Visitors can also explore Hegra, a UNESCO World Heritage site featuring Nabatean tombs, various inscriptions, and archaeological excavation sites.
The old town of AlUla was recognised by the World Tourism Organization in 2022 as one of the best tourist villages globally. It was selected among 32 villages worldwide for meeting all selection criteria. The town offers several local shops, restaurants, and cafes, providing a retreat for families and tourists from various countries.

Among these is the Winter at Tantora Festival, a significant artistic and cultural event featuring traditional sports like horseback archery and tent pegging. The festival also includes exploratory tours, art exhibitions, cultural displays, and the Ancient Kingdoms Festival.
