Sharjah's AlQurm Protected Area Enhances Marine Turtle Conservation With IOSEA MoU

The Environment and Protected Areas Authority in Sharjah (EPAA) has announced that the AlQurm Protected Area in Kalba City is now part of the Indian Ocean's South-East Asian (IOSEA) Marine Turtle memorandum of understanding (MoU). This inclusion marks it as the second site in Sharjah, following Sir Bu Nair Island Reserve. The UAE participated in the ninth meeting of the signatory countries of the memorandum held from June 24th to 27th in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.

During the meeting, the role of Sharjah's Environment and Protected Areas Authority in environmental conservation and biodiversity was highlighted. The focus was on their dedication to protecting various species, particularly marine turtles. The AlQurm Protected Area in Khor Kalba on the UAE's east coast was showcased for its leading experience in this field. Joining the memorandum acknowledges AlQurm's achievements and sustainable efforts.

AlQurm Joins IOSEA Turtle MoU

Hana Saif Al Suwaidi, Chairperson of EPAA, expressed gratitude to H.H. Dr. Sheikh Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah. She credited his support as crucial for achieving this milestone for Sharjah. His Highness's advocacy for preserving biodiversity and protecting natural life has been instrumental.

Al Suwaidi emphasised that AlQurm Protected Area is unique as it hosts the only mangrove trees on the Gulf of Oman coast in the UAE. It also boasts the oldest mangrove forest in the region and is home to the critically endangered Arabian Collared Kingfisher, found exclusively here. The area supports large gatherings of juvenile marine turtles on the UAE's east coast, providing them with nourishment.

The site serves as a comprehensive centre for research, education, and conservation initiatives. Its official classification under IOSEA will enhance conservation efforts significantly. This designation acts as a guide for policymakers on its environmental value. Additionally, it was listed as a Wetland of International Importance under the Ramsar Convention in 2013.

Educational and Conservation Efforts

The Khor Kalba Mangrove Centre within AlQurm serves as an educational hub to inform the public about mangrove habitats and their conservation importance. It is also the sole centre for marine turtle rehabilitation on the UAE's east coast. Over 150 species of local and migratory birds find feeding and nesting grounds here, along with more than 90 species of crustaceans and 100 species of fish.

Al Suwaidi highlighted EPAA’s commitment to representing Sharjah at global environmental meetings. She noted that innovative steps and significant achievements have been introduced by EPAA in this regard. The Sharjah Government consistently supports EPAA’s efforts to ensure success in their environmental goals.

The EPAA protects marine turtles from threats through initiatives like the Sharjah Strandings Response Program. This program is crucial for safeguarding these creatures' future by addressing immediate dangers they face.

This new milestone underscores Sharjah’s dedication to environmental protection and biodiversity preservation. The continuous support from local authorities ensures that these efforts will persist effectively.
