Alfadley Commends Smallholders For Bolstering Global Food Security And Rural Growth
Eng. Abdulrahman Alfadley, Minister of Environment, Water and Agriculture, underscored the essential role of smallholder and indigenous communities in maintaining a sustainable food system. Speaking at the recent G20 Agriculture Ministers' Meeting in Brazil, he stressed the importance of providing farmers with necessary resources and support.
Alfadley highlighted Saudi Arabia's efforts to empower smallholders through the Sustainable Agricultural Rural Development Program. This initiative aims to enhance the capacity of smallholders and family farms, enabling them to add value to their produce and rural activities. The program has positively impacted over 120,000 beneficiaries in 2023 by increasing their production capabilities.

The minister stated: "We recognize the invaluable contributions of smallholders. We can boost their productivity and strengthen rural communities by empowering them with financing, agricultural extension services, and essential inputs." This statement reflects Saudi Arabia's commitment to supporting its agricultural sector.
Alfadley also emphasized the significance of integrating fisheries and aquaculture into value chains. He noted that Saudi Arabia has achieved over 190,000 tons of fisheries and aquaculture production, meeting around 60% of local consumption needs. "Recognizing its importance, we are working to transform the aquaculture sector by attracting investments and increasing local production," he said.
The fisheries sector is crucial for sustainable agricultural development in Saudi Arabia. It creates income opportunities and significantly contributes to food security. Alfadley stressed that this sector plays a vital role in achieving these goals.
Global Challenges and Initiatives
Addressing global challenges, Alfadley pointed out that many regions worldwide still suffer from drought impacts. He highlighted the UN Convention to Combat Desertification as a key platform for discussing contemporary challenges and planning for a sustainable future.
In his speech, Alfadley invited attendees to join COP16 in Riyadh this December. This invitation underscores Saudi Arabia's active participation in global environmental initiatives aimed at combating desertification and promoting sustainability.
The minister's remarks at the G20 meeting reflect Saudi Arabia's comprehensive approach to enhancing its agricultural sector while addressing global environmental challenges. By empowering smallholders and integrating fisheries into value chains, the country aims to achieve sustainable agricultural development.
