Landmark Partnership Aims To Embed Climate Change Education In Kenyan Schools
Alef Education, the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD), and UNICEF have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to introduce climate change education in Kenyan public schools. This partnership aims to use technology and digital learning to equip students and educators with essential knowledge and skills to tackle the climate crisis.
The MoU outlines collaboration between the three organisations to create a comprehensive climate education course. This course will complement the existing curriculum developed by KICD under the Ministry of Education's guidance. The content will be accessible through KICD's Kenya Education Cloud platform, a national digital learning initiative connecting schools with educational resources.

Prof. Charles Ochieng Ong'ondo, CEO of KICD, highlighted the importance of this initiative. He stated, "This collaboration reflects our commitment to providing relevant and timely educational content that prepares learners for the future. Leveraging the available digital platform and integrating climate change education into the curriculum is a critical step in building a sustainable society."
The partnership aims to ensure that climate change education remains dynamic and effective. Alef Education will provide high-quality digital content aligned with best educational practices. This includes videos, quizzes, and interactive materials on carbon literacy, helping learners understand and address climate change complexities.
Geoffrey Alphonso, CEO of Alef Education, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership. He said, "We are delighted to partner with KICD and UNICEF to facilitate the integration of climate change into the public school curriculum in Kenya. This partnership underscores our commitment to ensuring every student has access to climate education through innovative learning solutions and programmes."
Empowering Future Generations
Shaheen Nilofer, UNICEF Country Representative, emphasised UNICEF's dedication to innovative educational solutions. She remarked, "Our collaboration with KCID and Alef Education demonstrates our commitment to finding new and innovative ways to equip children with the tools they need in today's world. Children are the least responsible for the climate crisis yet bear the brunt of its impact."
The signing ceremony took place at KICD offices in Nairobi, attended by representatives from various ministries, including Education and ICT Authority, as well as development partners like the UAE ambassador.
This MoU signifies a major advancement in climate change education in Kenya. It highlights all partners' dedication to fostering a greener and more resilient future for Kenya's youth.
