Longlists For 4th Edition Of ALC's Research Grants Programme Revealed

The Abu Dhabi Arabic Language Centre (ALC), a division of the Department of Culture and Tourism - Abu Dhabi (DCT Abu Dhabi), has announced the longlists for its Research Grants program in 2024. The program aims to support researchers in the Arabic language and promote scientific studies that enhance knowledge and advance the language.This year, the program received 270 nominations from 31 countries, with Egypt having the highest participation rates, followed by Morocco, Syria, and Jordan. The longlist includes 33 nominated works across four knowledge fields: Literature and Criticism, Editing of Manuscripts, Arabic Lexicon, and Teaching Arabic to Non-Arabic Speakers.In the Literature and Criticism category, there are 19 works that cover a range of topics. Some notable works include "Character of the Other and Its Representations in Modern Arabic Feminist Poem" by Iyad Abdel Majeed Ibrahim and Ali Haddad Hussein Al-Saray, "Popular History of Arab Leaders in the Modern Era: Prince Abdel Qader Al-Jazairi, Saad Zaghloul, King Faisal, and Sheikh Zayed" by Khaled Abu Al-Lail, and "The Ego and Its Shadows: Autobiography in Modern Arabic Poetry" by Abdul Latif Al-Warari.The Editing of Manuscripts category features seven works, including "Explanation of the Al-Hamasa Collection by Abi Tammam, Explanation of Abu Al-Futuh Al-Jurjani, Thabit bin Muhammad Al-Adawi Al-Andalusi" by Ahmed Muhammad Attiya Abdul Hadi and "Description of Blindness: A Study of Popular Literary Narratives and the Editing of an Anonymous Copy of the One Thousand and One Nights" by Faraj Al-Fakharani.The Arabic Lexicon category includes five works that focus on different aspects of the language. These include "Bekheet's Dictionary of Verbal Idioms, Arabic-English" by Ramadan Mohammed Mohammed Ahmed Bekheet and "The Making of Modern Lexicon: Arabisation of Sciences and the Conflict over Modernising Arabic in Egypt 1918-1970" by Khalid Abu Huraira Ahmed.Lastly, the Teaching Arabic to Non-Arabic Speakers category has two submissions. These include "Integrating 21st Century Skills into Teaching Arabic to Non-Native Speakers: Theoretical Foundations and Applied Strategies" by Khaled Abu Amsha and "Arabic Literature for Speakers of Other Languages in the Light of Text Linguistics" by Muhammad Daoud and Israa Al-Hajj.The Abu Dhabi Arabic Language Centre plans to publish the winning works from the Research Grants program as part of the Basaer (Insights) series of research papers and studies. The publication will be showcased at the 33rd Abu Dhabi International Book Fair (ADIBF 2024), which took place from April 29th to May 5th, 2024.The Research Grants program by the Abu Dhabi Arabic Language Centre continues to provide a platform for researchers to contribute to the advancement of the Arabic language. With a diverse range of topics and participants from various countries, this program plays a crucial role in promoting knowledge and enriching the cultural identity associated with the Arabic language.
