Al Zeer Salem Epic Revival Brings Arab Heritage To Life At Sharjah's Al Majaz Amphitheatre
The new staging of "Al Zeer Salem" at Al Majaz Amphitheatre presents a large-scale Arab theatrical production that links heritage with contemporary performance. The drama revisits a classic legend through a modern reading that highlights human motives, moral choices, and the weight of revenge.
Presented under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, the work is positioned as a major cultural event for the emirate. It underscores Sharjah’s ongoing interest in theatre rooted in Arab history.

The first shows of "Al Zeer Salem" are scheduled for Friday at Al Majaz Amphitheatre and will continue for three consecutive days. The performance runs for 120 minutes, allowing time to unfold the epic storyline and explore the development of each central character.
The script is written by Othman Johaa, who presents a fresh vision of the story while maintaining its poetic essence. The narrative highlights the inner struggle within Al Zeer Salem, balancing personal duty, family loyalty, and questions surrounding justice and retribution.
The production brings together a group of recognised Arab performers. Director Salloum Haddad also appears in the play, alongside Bassem Yakhour, Abed Fahad, and actress Amal Mohammed. Their participation supports a detailed dramatic treatment of the legend and strengthens the emotional impact on audiences.
"Al Zeer Salem" follows the War of Al Basus and tracks the journey of Al Zeer Salem, known as Abu Layla Al-Muhalhil, as the character seeks to avenge the killing of brother Kulaib. The story examines how revenge can shape destinies and relationships across generations.
Al Zeer Salem heritage, production design and Sharjah’s cultural role
The production recreates one of the best-known epics in Arab cultural memory through a contemporary artistic approach. It preserves the atmosphere of classical verse while introducing a theatrical structure that focuses on human emotions, internal conflict, and the consequences of choosing vengeance over reconciliation.
The performance makes use of advanced visual and technical elements, including a dynamic stage design that reflects shifts in the storyline. Arabic music, along with tailored lighting and sound effects, supports the dramatic rhythm and helps create an immersive theatrical environment for viewers in Sharjah.
Tariq Saeed Allay, Director General of the Sharjah Government Media Bureau, states that hosting "Al Zeer Salem" at Al Majaz Amphitheatre reflects the emirate’s commitment to Arab theatre that draws from heritage while speaking to the present. The production also adds to the diversity of the local performing arts scene.
