Al-Rayyan Mosque: Preserving Over 400 Years Of Jazan's Archaeological Heritage

In the heart of Jizan region, nestled atop a hill in Al-Rayyan village, stands an architectural testament to the rich Islamic heritage of Saudi Arabia. The Al-Rayyan Mosque, with its history possibly stretching back over 400 years, is among the oldest archaeological mosques in the area. Despite extensive research, the exact date of its construction remains a mystery, as historical sources and field surveys conducted by an encyclopedia of Jazan monuments team have yet to pinpoint its era due to the unique elements found in its walls, mihrab, and domes.

The mosque's ancient construction techniques have withstood the test of time, showcasing the durability and traditional patterns used in its original structure. Covering approximately 120 square meters, it could initially accommodate around 100 worshippers. The use of stones and pieces of burned mud, along with exterior walls reaching about one meter in width, exemplifies the robust construction methods of the past. At the heart of this architectural marvel are two rectangular stone bases connected through stone arches to six throne-shaped domes that adorn the roof.

Al-Rayyan Mosque's Ancient Legacy

In 1432 AH, recognizing the need to accommodate a growing number of worshippers, an expansion was undertaken. This modern extension spans about 300 square meters and can hold more than 250 worshippers, seamlessly blending with the mosque's antique construction while preserving its historical essence.

The Ministry of Islamic Affairs, Dawah, and Guidance branch in Jazan has shown a keen interest in preserving this historical monument. The Al-Rayyan Mosque has served not only as a place of worship but also as a center for knowledge and Quran memorization throughout its centuries-long history. Its preservation is a testament to Saudi Arabia's commitment to maintaining its Islamic heritage and architectural legacy.
