Abdullah Al Rabeeah Highlights Islamic Charity's Role In Addressing Refugee Crisis At UN Event

Abdullah Al Rabeeah, Advisor to the Royal Court and Supervisor General of King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Centre (KSrelief), recently attended a high-level event organised by UNHCR. The event, titled "The Role of Islamic Philanthropy in Responding to the Global Refugee Crisis," took place alongside the 79th session of the UN General Assembly in New York City. Al Rabeeah expressed gratitude to UNHCR for facilitating this crucial discussion on Islamic charitable work.

Al Rabeeah highlighted that charity and zakat are fundamental aspects of Islam, significantly aiding those in need. He emphasised that Saudi Arabia conducts its charitable activities under the guidance of Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud. The Kingdom was among the first to join the Global Islamic Fund for Refugees (GIFR), established by UNHCR and the Islamic Solidarity Fund for Development (ISFD) in September 2022.

Al Rabeeah on Islamic Charity and Refugees

The Kingdom has actively participated as a member of GIFR's Steering Committee, contributing $10 million to its endowment fund. Al Rabeeah noted Saudi Arabia's dedication to refugee welfare, forming partnerships with relevant organisations to provide assistance. He stressed the importance of developing sustainable mechanisms to meet refugees' basic needs, ensuring their safety and dignity in host countries until they can return home.

Al Rabeeah expressed appreciation towards UNHCR and ISFD for initiating GIFR. He called upon friendly nations to help share the financial burden necessary for securing sustainable resources for millions of refugees and displaced individuals, along with their host communities. This collaborative effort aims at creating a more stable environment for those affected by displacement.

Saudi Arabia's involvement in global humanitarian efforts reflects its commitment to supporting vulnerable populations worldwide. By engaging in initiatives like GIFR, the Kingdom seeks to enhance international cooperation in addressing refugee challenges through Islamic philanthropy.

The event underscored the vital role that Islamic charitable practices play in alleviating global crises. Through continued collaboration and financial contributions, countries can work together to provide lasting solutions for refugees and displaced persons across various regions.
