Al Qassimi Hospital Leads With Innovative Non-Surgical Uterine Fibroid Treatment

Al Qassimi Women’s and Children’s Hospital in Sharjah has reached a significant milestone by treating uterine fibroids without surgery. This achievement, part of the Emirates Health Services (EHS), involved successfully treating eight patients who had issues like bleeding and pain due to fibroids.

Dr. Muna Khalfan Sabt, Head of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the hospital, stated that the treatment unit uses a new technique approved by the US Food and Drug Administration. This method, known as radiofrequency ablation, is effective and safe for treating uterine fibroids without surgical removal.

Innovative Fibroid Treatment Unveiled

Radiofrequency ablation is a modern method for treating soft tissue tumors such as fibroids. Recent studies have shown its effectiveness in various organs including the liver, kidneys, adrenal gland, thyroid gland, breasts, bones, and uterus.

Dr. Muna explained that this technique gradually reduces fibroid size through thermal ablation without surgery or serious side effects. She highlighted its effectiveness and safety in preserving uterine health. Patients can leave the hospital on the same day and return to normal activities within five days.

The hospital's adoption of radiofrequency ablation technology demonstrates its dedication to providing top-notch medical care. This technique is unique as it does not require surgical intervention.

Impact of Uterine Fibroids

Dr. Mona Kashwani, Specialist in Gynecological Diseases and Robotic Surgery at the hospital, noted that uterine fibroids are benign tumors affecting 30 percent of women. These tumors cause symptoms like bleeding, pain, fertility issues, and recurrent miscarriages.

She added that advanced stages of uterine fibroids could impact vital organs such as the urinary system and kidneys, leading to complications during pregnancy. Therefore, timely diagnosis and treatment are essential.

Comprehensive Treatment Options

The hospital has integrated radiofrequency ablation into its existing procedures for treating uterine fibroids. These include open surgery, robot-assisted removal, and uterine artery embolization.

This achievement reflects the collaborative efforts of the hospital's multidisciplinary team and substantial support from EHS in equipping facilities with high-quality medical technologies.

The use of modern techniques like radiofrequency ablation underscores Al Qassimi Women’s and Children’s Hospital's commitment to advancing medical care for women in Sharjah.
